When the game was first released it was massively open world on a scale similar to Minecraft's current iteration. They got rid of that entirely without a reason why.

They may have shrunk the world size a little bit, but it is still open world. You can always skip the progression system by playing Sandbox mode to get straight to the huge worlds.

No, they didn't 'get rid of that entirely', they just added progression, so you have to work to reach that level.... I honestly think this is good, because as someone with quite limited time, you end up with quite a sense of achievment/reason to keep playing the game... I enjoyed early access (had it since release week), but i think the new version of the game is so much better

Such lies! It is open world, you just need to unlock parts of the big open world as you play it. I think you didn't play it at all buddy.

no not correct when it was in beta it was an unlimited size map like a full size world . you could go on forever and never get back to where you left off .. i tried .. i spent tonnes of time in the beta getting millions of studs in the process it was trully unlimited .. so much so if you left an area chances of finding it again was next too impossible .. when they brought the game too 1.0 status they changed it too finite maps of various sizes .. that had edges

so open world after you do the quests yes it is but limited size
open world with unlimited borders and truy open world use was only on the beta

the screenshots i have here show there was no map .. altho the world was less dense

BETA SCREENSHOTS

release version with map and marked edges with limits

and just incase someone says you have not completed it enough in that latest screenshot
this is the 5th playthro i have done below

Ah ok. Well I was thinking that open world is when you can travel to different planets/ islands with the spaceship and play it as a sandbox kinda game. But you're right, if you talking about a type of open world like witcher 3 or dragon age then this one wouldn't be 100% open world.
Still to me this game have worlds which are quite big in size with many quests and activities. If you put together the planets it's a big landscape. The difference is that it's split in sections.
But I do like this type of model. It feels as if one is achieving something when you move from one area to the next. Reminds me of Shadow of Mordor model where you do have sections to finish off before moving on.

Lies. There is a legit reason and it is the savegame size. Those enormous worlds would eat a lot of virtual cake off of your disk.
