Collect everything and build cool stuff with it. Explore procedurally generated worlds, fight through dungeons, blow up caves, flatten forests, or sculpt mountains. If building isn't your thing your can also put things built by others in your world or just ignore that part.
Your character progresses in the sense that you gain abilities by gathering gold bricks that are obtained from treasure chests, quests, monsters, trader.
As aforementioned, though, your real goals may be building, exploring, ect; after the tutorials, you can do whatever you want, really. You can massive buildings, forests, and whatnot; it's possible to make some truly impressive models.
