What do the onscreen numbers mean?

I've just started playing and as I neared the end of the first act 12/16 appeared and stayed until I left the camp area. I presumed it meant I missed 4 things?

Not sure.. usually a number like that refers to the amount of ammunition in your weapon and the number of additional ammunition your carrying. For example 12 would refer to you having twelve rounds in your weapon and the 16 would refer to the additional ammo left in your inventory. Not sure if that's what your referring to? Screen may have glitched the numbers think your referring to something else but can't tell. Which mission was this?

I had a gun and ammo in inventory but I was carrying a hatchet, so was the other person I could swap leadership with. It was the first act at the camping place

Okay got you I think. My guess and it's just a guess is that the numbers for the guns/ammo count glitched, since it went away when you left the ranger station I don't think it's anything to worry about and no it doesn't refer to missing anything so don't worry.
