How do you switch characters?
I don't want to play as what you start as, how do you switch?

2. They have to be a 'friend', that means you have done enough missions for them that they now call you a friend.
3. On the map screen is a list of all the people in your base. Select a person and you will see a key press to play as/switch to that person. But only if they are a 'friend' otherwise you will not have the option to switch to them.

The story mode explains exactly how to do that when you 'rescue' the lady down by the river near the Ranger Station at the start of the game. Read the help topics in game.

Thanks dude but yeah didn't want to play as that woman either. I wanted to play as Ed but for some reason it wasn't possible. I guess because he didn't have 'friend' status, which doesn't make sense to me. Who is that status for even. Universal friend of everyone?

THE LEGENDARY MODDER GRACES THIS THREAD.

hahahah you cant escape your legend sir.

also, he is absolutely correct.

re: op's last post
you can play as ed, but he has to go through a spoiler first in the 'story', he's playable after that.

Hm yeah I just like to immerse in games and being a white guy I have trouble with that when the game forces me to play something totally different. Breaks the immersion.

If you play breakdown, you can select a character that you have unlocked to start with.

The story mode requires you to play a specific character until you finally make it down off the mountain and join the group of survivors at the church. Then you will have an opportunity to switch to another character. Ed is locked out because of the story, but you will eventually be able to switch to him.

Thank you, I usually get the exact opposite reaction and that makes one loose enthusiasm to share mods. :)

Thanks man, yeah I played until the church and was able to switch to different people. Even earlier too, briefly, after rescuing Maya. Wanted to switch to Ed though but I guess that happens later then.

Having another problem now though that prevents me from playing. Game starts up but I don't see anything except for my desktop or whatever is open and a tiny black square in the top left. Can't play now. Ah well. Maybe it'll fix itself just like it broke itself.

Press ALT+Enter?

Tried. Worked the first time I started the game(and it worked) but now it's just stuck like that. Even after clicking on the square(which you'd think activates the possibly otherwise inactive window) followed by Alt+Enter. Now nothing happens. If I add Windows 8 and Disable full-screen optimisations compatibility settings then I won't get the 'not responding/end process' box after clicking the square, which is odd. Either way there doesn't seem to be a way. Still looking around for solutions. Deleted config.pak + verified files to redownload it too, and forced resolution/window settings in launch options(like -w1920 -h1080 -fullscreen/-windowed).

I found the below information, perhaps it will help you solve the issue? Good luck!
Note, change the resolution numbers to the resolution you want.

The -fullscreen method doesn't work for some users/versions, this fix works for 2560x1440, but has some minor shadow flickering.

Instructions

Right-click on the game in your Steam library and select Properties.
Click Set Launch Options.. then add: -devmode and click OK.
Create 3 files at your steamapps State of Decay YOSE folder (the folder where StateOfDecay.exe is located): autoexec.cfg, system.cfg and user.cfg
Add the following code to each file:

con_restricted = 0
sv_cheatprotection = 0
sys_intromoviesduringinit = 0
sys_rendersplashscreen = 0

r_Driver = "DX11"

r_Width = 2560
r_Height = 1440

r_ConsoleBackbufferWidth = 2560
r_ConsoleBackbufferHeight = 1440

Notes:
This will set the game to use the resolution you specified in the files you created and make the game start a little bit faster.

Thanks again man, seems I got it working. Even managed to test it out with 8k DSR. Works, albeit sub-60 at times. Still have never been able to see the intro videos for the game though, which is odd(are they even worth looking at?). They were either off-screen or the image was totally glitched out. Sometimes the game also likes to start with no sound. At least I can play now. I must say though even with compatibility settings this game seems like one of the worst-coded reasonably recent and 'big' titles I've seen for quite a while. When it does work it's a great experience though.
WillieSea Apr 28, 2021 @ 5:17am
Yeah, the game is a xbox console port, so it was coded to those specs, and then some changes for the PC.

The intro videos are company logo's only, so not worth seeing IMHO.

Gotta love ports... good to know though about the intro vids!
