How do you trade items between characters?

You don't.

You either move them to the inventory box (costs influence to take stuff out of this), or you place the stuff in a vehicle trunk. Then you switch to the other person and setup their inventory the way you want it.

Lost all the starter characters already, guess I’m going to restart the game. Kind of a hassle, makes looting more difficult

Why do you care if you lost the starter characters? Just recruit more from other survivor enclaves.
Of course, if you lost any of your characters, you may not be playing well enough to recruit other survivors. Take it slow, be quiet, and level up those characters and make sure you pick 'perks' on their character sheet.

Why wouldn't I? They were literally my first 2 characters with a story. The third character I got was completely random, and just showed up out of nowhere. Seemed like a bad start to the game

If you're losing people that quickly its an error on your end because in all my time playing this game I've never lost a character unless there was an error on my behave that caused their death like being under prepared for a horde or just being reckless. There's only been one time I intentionally got someone killed and this is that one time.

Keep some molotov firebombs on you as a get-out-of-jail card. If you are swarmed and surrounded by zeds, select the firebomb, and press F as soon as you can, and you will drop a molotov right where you are. You will get slightly burned, and run away while on fire, but all the zeds that were swarming your are now on fire and soon to be dead again.

Once clear, take a painkiller to restore your health.

Keep 3 foods, 3 painkillers, 3 molotovs on you at all times.
