For example, the active duty military character you get at the start of the game will give you Discipline as a possible wits specialty while a regular average Joe with no wits-related job may only be able to choose between Stealth and one other random thing.
I had a character that was an author and had high wits because of her job - I was able to choose between both Gold wits specialties (Resourcefulness and Discipline) when I specialized her.
Generally the gold ones have particular benefits that outdo the standard ones but they are all unique, so choose the one you think suits the character best. However having a background that gives you that knowledge will give you access to the more powerful ones.
