There is a big change at Level 45 - Juggs become "lethal" so if they grab someone, they will die (unless you stop them!) I am at level 99 - the big difference is how much health you lose when zeds bite you. Easy to die fast!
Melee weapon specialties are more useful than gun skills. If you want to fight Ferals easily, choose Blunt + uppercut. This works for ANY survivor. (Or if you have a nimble, choose "spin kick") Nimbles have better stamina regen, so you can choose Ninja or Focus Aim instead if you want. Combat Endurance defintely helps but possibly more so on Heavy Axe users.
Guns - .
22 and 9mm are less noisy without a silencer and they don't attract Ferals etc. BUT they are also weak against some freaks.
7.62mm is the strongest for headshot Ferals and Juggs, killing 2 bloaters with 1 bullet, BUT without a silencer they cause alot of spawns including Ferals!
Alot of the heroes are fun but you can make ANY survivor into a good character to play, you don't need nimbles or powerhouse to play better, they are just different.
What makes the biggest difference is the skills you choose
e.g if you choose Focus Aim instead of Ninja, looting quickly can make noise BUT you will have fun killing a horde with your gun in slow motion!
I try different combinations all the time - some are better for looting and others for rescue/trouble missions. Try things like nimble/sweep kick/heavy axe/focus Aim - great for close quarters horde destruction AND shooting Ferals/Juggs in the head from a distance. I love using those M60 MG;s that weight 20lbs on a powerhouse with a blunt/uppercut combo and Focus Aim.
The best part about this game for me is all the variety of choices you have for character types and skill sets, ways to kill zeds and even ways to kill survivors you don't want! ;)
Have fun, hope this helps.
~Did you avoid getting settled and just get the RV, research it & bounce out WITHOUT even unloading everyones stuff into the Storage locker?
~Example of my current situation is (level 8) is~~
i spawned @ that crashed Helicopter by fairgrounds.
-Made Helicopter outpost and after surved mission,,neighbors showed up always in same hous on corner on other side of town near gas station..lol you know the spot/house...
~took Marcus,his leadership, they join after the defense,boarding up windows mission..
****question~ is this the corrext way Leadership trait is to be used???
Now Lilly located the 2 sirvivors i had her scout for..
Now im @ 12 and i can go anywhere....
The question is should i get settled or go through these quick until whenevs?
~wherever I spawn, I try to head for my homebase location and setup an outpost there FIRST so then the cooldown starts for the next one. If I can collect some building materials on the way I will, because then as soon as you settle, you can fix everything and start building facilities. I rarely make outposts while still in the RV base because I don't want to waste influence.
Also, if you start the very FRIST survey mission, it won't fail by walking away from the area. SO you can go do what you want and come back to do the survey when you are ready. This prevents your other survivors from starting missions, it also prevents the building ingredient fetch quests. This doesn't work for any other survey missions, only the first one after breakout to new level. But it allows you to settle and prepare in relative peace. You can do this with many other missions though, just a preference.
~Leadership is really useful for recruiting new survivors. So if an enclave asks for help and you assist with a leadership character, they will become friendly quicker. Obviously the higher their leader skill is, the better it will work. Something I try to do is make this help missions last a long time, kill lots of zeds while they watch, you seem to get more trust in one single mission that doing lots of missions before you can recruit them.
~btw you have Marcus and Amelia, they are both Powerhouse - I would swap Amelia for a nimble when you find one.
~to answer about how quickly to play each level, it depends what your goal is. I wanted to get too 99, but now that I have, I would tell anyone to enjoy a slow run from maybe 40 to 60/75. Take your time and build, explore all the loot locations, learn where to find good guns etc. Keep looking for new survivors to see if they ahve skills you like. Don't rush, just enjoy anything new and if you start getting bored after building everything, move on to next level and rinse/repeat.
It's a good idea to have about 90% high influence cost weapons (melee and range) and 10% low cost influence. Occasionally you're going to be in a situation where the character you're playing with needs something quick and doesn't have the influence to get the best quality gear. If you don't have a couple 6-18 influence cost weapons, you're left with your hands until you find one.
Also a good idea to keep heavy backpacks on most characters, especially Powerhouses. The smaller backpacks I've found useful on my characters that I use primarily for missions/rescues along with a high-weight weapon like a grenade launcher, assault rifle, or sledgehammer.
Get the library unlocks researched as quickly as you can. Once you've got them all, there's no reason to build it again unless you're having trouble raising your Wits. Exercise facilities, gardens, and medical tents are the best options to choose from in general.
I nearly always pack a handgun on characters, even the melee specialized ones. There are occasions where it's far simpler to pop off a couple silenced headshots and run to a vehicle than mow down a group of zeds with melee. Also good for screamers/bloaters.
Don't underestimate the power of safe zones, and always spend the 1 fuel to expand their reach. If possible, organize 4-5 safe zones around your home location. This will prevent zombie hordes from causing you any headaches at home.
Learn what the special abilities do. Alicia Hawke(?) and a couple other military people have the drone ability, which is a life saver. I'm not a fan of Ray's character skills (revolver specialization, really?), but his vehicle delivery power is awesome.
I always have "useless" characters eaten by zombies close to the home location once I have the necessary amount to keep a location. There are some characters that come as part of a group of survivors who cause more issues than help. Far better to deal with the short term issues of a slain survivor than allow it to repeatedly affect other community members, sometimes causing them to run away and have long, occasionally permanent, sad statuses.
Gave her the roundhouse, the sweep seemed slower. and i dont recall it tripping multiples..
But she came w/ Shotguns specialized.. UGH!! that sucks but whatevs. doesn't mean i haveta use shotgun... She will replace Amelia...
~Marcus aint going anywhere. i still view him as the protaganist..
~About Survey Missions & how they paused other missions/survivors,escort,annoying Zed hunts etc..
believe it or not i used to know this..Back on the xbox360 when i 1st played breakdown..
~i'll mess around w/ it in tonights power seesion..
~Do you only get the acknowledgment/reward for killing Horde if Lilly announces they are everywhere?? Sometimes i get the + fame message box shows up and other times just that i killed em....
I know car horde kills don't count...
back in the day i would take out the horde save for 1, get out kill the 1 and get the fame and bounce...but i suspect that has been changed or patched with YOSE and now if you even kill 1 w/ a car= all is lost on that Horde...i dunno...
i do know not to molotov with neighbors w/ you....DUMB SOB'S!!!!!!
it takes maaadddd skills to not burn them and thow it already running backwards lol..
i almost got it down...
SonnyJim,,i do that too w/ the cars...i use 1 and store that levels food & molotovs.
im starting to like the Wilkenson looking molotov(not the ones we make)
because they burn fast & easier to not burn yourself or unintended..
but annoying to transport around...thats life i guess...
~I haven't moved a homebase once in Breakdown & never will..
~i was just thinking how garbage a location the fairgrounds are based on lack of available resources..then i remembered that it's literally right next door to Marshal if you leave from the opther side of the fairgrounds and pass that truck stop warehouse...
~usually 3 materials there. i imagine that gets less & less as you level...
~ i can say i 100% know what resources are where now.
i don't know which houses have what yet except behind the dinosaur rest stop house..i know that one has materials usually...
~HOW FUNNY that all post offices have guns aka going Postal haha. uber guns too...
~I still need to upgrade 1 facility to get that hero/achievment unlock..i think it might be food storage facility but i honestly don't know...
so im trying different ones this level since im settled @ Fairgrounds..Maaybe it's garden..
i thought it mighta been the Tattoo but that wasn't a facility...
MAN, i was hoping that Tattoo girl woulda been worth keeping.. she had nothing besides the Tattoo..
~Also starting to think maybe i don't need Doc Hansen..
That heal skill is uber but it's slow to refill.. seems slower then WOrds of Encouragment..
and even that only last like 5 minutes until tired again...
I did manage to get SAM almost maxed on this level in 1 run..but that was cause i was sooo hyped to get the Nimble kick after this thread.... ;)
~QUESTIONS~
~Is there a method to STAMINA aka 'tired'?
like if i run and the meter hit's zero/all thew way down Does that mean i get tired faster and i should avoid that for anti Tired purposs? i usually avoid it but if thats whats making me tired faster then i will purge it completely..
~best methos for killing Ferals?
if i can't snipe/molotov em i use Dropkick then try and execute while they r down.
but im only 50% with dodging em..waaay harder to get the timing down then the simple Juggernaut charge....
~Also,,i love leading the juggernaut away on a Siege defense if i have no ranged :D
~
KK,,,am i just confused by the wording of "spreading/expanding safe zones" cause i don't recall this option?
im pretty sure you don't mean outpost that connext to home base thus expanding the home base safe zone to control safety etc..
~OH WAIT, LOL do you mean the option that slowly countdowns the mine thing option under the outpost? i think so...cause that cost 1 fuel....
yeah i use that everytime it's available. like every hour or two....
KK, i never used a smaller backpack..
i havent had any reaosn to yet cause weight managment hasn;t been a facto yet.
unless im unloading from my storage to go and dump it @ neighbors..
thats what neighbors are for ;)
~I was able to get a good defense @ fairgrounds..i started @ helicopter & made that a outpost when i started and ended up keeping it.(never made the 2nd/rarely ever do)
made 3 others in each direction and the safe zone is huge around fairgrounds..
but I havent even driven to RV yet and spent all matrials on trying to find what facility i havent built yet. ;)
~might haveta hed over to Marshal,,,was gonna go raid police station/gun store anyways for possible luck.
Thanks guys...i really appreciate the time and help from yous!!
(not the Dark Souls though ;)< ive plans for that one someday when i can run it....

I've found the smaller backpacks a niche for the example I mentioned, because mission/rescue characters aren't usually picking up resources. This allows them to carry heavier weapons and still be outfitted with a few molotovs, snacks, and pain killers.
Snyder's has always proven to be the most defendable in my playthroughs. The Fairgrounds are decent, but the watchtower doesn't aim towards the parking lot which occasionally lets zeds in. Same for the entrance on the opposite end near the military outpost site. The wide open area of the Snyder's also lets other characters shoot their weapons from a distance.
Always hit the police station and gun stores. Good firearms are difficult to come by. CLEO's weapons I've found to be okay, but generally aren't as "fun" to use.
Yes, that mission is that one I referenced where they head towards your home location. I usually get this only when I come back to the game after a long (10+ hour) break. There's another mission of a similar nature, although these hordes typically tend to inhabit random buildings and create an infestation rather than attack your home location. Both should give you influence and fame.
When you're taking 5 minutes to drive materials back to your home base, you'll start considering moving your home base. Not only to decrease the travel time, but to reduce the chance of launching your vehicle into the stratosphere because of a pebble with some sorely needed supplies in the back.
Nearly all of the locations give you a hint as to the type of materials inside. If it's a regular house: snacks, food rucksacks, pistols, meds, etc.
Abandoned house/warehouse: Material rucksacks, heavy melee weapons, durable melee weapons, silencers
I'm sure you're already getting familiar with which shiny sources provide what items. It's not like you're going to find a firearm searching the food store.
Wish it told you what you need, but it doesn't. For me, it was the second type of garage. Not much else you can do except experiment and check off the facilities you know for sure you've already built.
I try not to run down my stamina to the point of being "out of breath" unless I'm training stamina at the home location because I have bad luck getting ambushed by zeds. If I need to run long distances, I'll eat a snack around halfway through my stamina bar. I'm not sure if you reach "tired" status faster when you go "out of breath", however I'm also not one to take that chance, lol.
For Ferals, my best tactic has been to let it try to tackle me, then use special abilities or the duck maneuver to get out of the way. When the Feral misses, it's on the ground ready for a coup de grace if you get there quick enough. If not, it gives you enough time for a few clean headshots.
One of the bugs I've found, maybe intentional, is that when my survivors get low on HP and I feel like they're about to get ripped apart, you can open the menu and switch to another character at home. By doing this, it essentially places the survivor who's getting whupped into a freeze mode and they return back to base over the next few minutes.
I've heard decent things about Offworld Trading Company and Epistory. Did you enjoy them?
me, i haven't played either..
OWT is more expensive,,but the people who mention Epistory tend to like it alot..
~That's cool about switching characters if you are getting blasted by feral etc..
I always just assumed ya had to be in the home base to switch...
~I', a lil surprised there's no fee or penalty to switch characters..
I have 4 cars # Fairgrounds right now.. i only put 2 the others just showed up lol..
But i fill up the trunks with guns that the community members get themselves..
Then a mission and repeat and they all get more...
very helpful but a lil heavy on the cheese ;D
**Also surprised they allow us to carry our storage container contents..
Woulda been hellova difficult/frustrating if they only allowed us to bring what the 6 survivors carry on they're persons.
~I agreebout the Cleo wepaons. esp Guns..
The reason i lost the CLeo .40 hangun or was it .44 it was automatic with silence & Zoom..
the reason i lost it level 1-4 was cause i wasn't checking everyone before i bounced.
and oh yeah,,,cause i kinda sucked compaired to a sweet 9 mm im using recently. i forget name but it has 3 in the damage category....
~the Cleo edged wepaon is fast but my fav is the regular machete...
~after i typed the previous message and returned to the game tonight i had several missions going and one of em was some hunting mission & the dude died..
it was Estenzo Sanchez or something..He had Cooking + COnstruction.. my only member w/ a double...lesson learned the hard way!!!!!!
~i got a hordaculture lady tonight rotf how lame.
Probably OWT. Epistory has a decent hook, but I'm more a fan of RTS personally.
It helps when you happen to forget that you're using a must-save character and forgot to bring adequate protection.
It'd be more difficult, but frankly I'm not someone that puts much stock into difficulty being reliant on stats. Kind of like how some games' version of increasing difficulty means you get -50% health and enemies get +50% health. It doesn't really change the gameplay formula, it just means you have less room for mistakes and kind of pads out the play time artificially. I've never heard of someone saying that they've enjoyed fighting Yiazmat in FFXII, even though it's considered the most powerful (side) boss in the game due to it's massive amount of health.
I won't say that the CLEO supplies are worthless, they're just less valuable to my playstyle than the original weapons. Edged weapons have easily been the worst from my perspective, but maybe that's because I tend to fight a lot of zeds. Edged weapons just seem so inefficient compared to a Crusty Shovel and Powerhouse skill.
Increase your total outposts. There's a 20%(?) chance for every outpost that survivors come home alive on side missions, going well above 100% for the home locations with 6+ outposts.
I was like Oh snap! Yiazamat aint that hard,,Then Dude unleashes 'GROWING-TOUGH' or 'Growing Treats' and then despair sets in... 7 hours & 4 tries later = :):):)
~~I too am picky about Difficulty & hate mediocre types of bullet sponges...The absolute all time worst for me was my last Halo Game. Halo Reach! on the hardest/nightmare or 2nd to hardest and the tactics didn't improve at all...all Bungie did was make the enemy captain have soo many hitpoints that all i had was regular ammo left and i would get his shields down & whenever id reload= His shields would recharge...i rage quit and didn't play Halo again until Halo 2 remaster on Xbox... whatevs..
~Shark Hoodie Guy just shgowed up in Trumbull...i can't remember why i was soo dissapointe din him on level 1. but i didn't take him...problem now is im already at population 20 and not
1 single person has double needed-skills except Leadership + counselling..<lame
Yeah the standard 'Machete' is my absolute fav..kinda rare as i only see it once or twice a round..
~The Cleo axe is fast...and so is the Cleo machete, but i havent seen that in awhile..
**I noticed most people dislike Blunt and favor edged & Powerhouse...
I was always good @ Blunt & Powerhouse and recently tried to get better @ Edged...
I tend to get worked. precision VS hack n slash is the key but.....
~i was thinking after reading previous post from you or Sonny earlier about
Putting Powerhouse on a non powerhouse character..i forget what thats called when they have "strong-back and can carry 4 items instead of 3..i thought its 'powerhouse'
~i made Amelia Rifles becaus id never used rifle proficiency before and when i wqas mssing around with a 7.62 rifle with the hero = 'The Hunter' on last level & really liked the rifle British Lenfield 7.62.. it was Iron SIghts but it killed a zombie from soo far away...
Was also dissapointed w/ The Hunter lack of unique stats or perks. he looked cool too w/ his redneck Camo.. whatvs...
~~Amelia might be coming w/ now that my COnstruction/cook guy died..Maybe Sam Rockwell cause she is nimble & i just ignore her SHotgun trait....
**If memory serves KK, does THE JUDGE also come w/ Shotguns perk? haven't seen her since story mode...
~~~And thinking of The Judge & storymode,,i was thinking of the Sherriff whom i failed to save in storymode.. I am betting HE is the hero i unlock for the Revolver 100 kills achievment..
Just because i havent seen him & i think he was packing a revolver..
~Cant remember what Andy Pimm was stat wise.. i know he looks like a ZOmbie ;)
yeah yeah heroes arent everything, but they are a break from the grind eh...
*i sent friend invite KK. hit me up when you se it...
Leadership + Counseling characters are my mission/rescue characters with small backpacks.
Honestly, you're probably better off with around 15-16 survivors. Too many make it a hassle to constantly solve their side missions of sadness or anger. Take a couple out to pasture and let the zeds feed.
Don't do more than 1-2 on a single session, though. There are some steep mood penalties for every death. You should be able to see who takes the death negatively on the notification screen. If you're able to switch to that character, use them for a couple missions or rucksack gathering and it should change their mood back to positive.
For me, it goes: Heavy, Blunt, Edged
For firearms: Rifle, Assault, Pistol, Light Machine, Submachine, Grenade, Shotgun, Revolver
Hm. I'm fairly sure Powerhouse is an ability they have to have when you recruit them.
Judge Lawton comes with:
Traits - Autocrat, Lawyer, Studied Linguistic, Tough As Nails
Skills - Cardio, Wits, Fighting, Shooting, Research, Jurisprudence
Doesn't seem to have shotguns pre-selected.
Sounds familiar for the Sheriff. Although I haven't played in some time.
You can find out more info about any suvivor here: http://stateofdecay.wikia.com/wiki/Survivors
