The "story" consists mainly of beating all the plague hearts in the town, and completing the missions for the leaders - which are typically just simple go here, kill that sort of missions.
They sort of went for more of a sandbox style game this time around, like the Breakdown DLC, as opposed to the original game's story mode.
Yeah, thats what I figured, and it kind of stinks. They tried to make a mash of the OG SoD1 mode and SoD1 Breakdown, but took the core parts out of both of them (No story, and no hero unlocking)
Kinda. The "hero unlocking" is kinda still around. When you "finish" the game you not only get a buff for future games (based on what leader type you finished with), but you also save all your survivors for use in new games. Not sure if they keep all their skill leveled and the like.. as I haven't yet managed to finish. One is about ready to do so, and another is stuck almost to the end.. but the quest seems to have bugged out and stopped progressing.
Edit: I finished the one that was close. You do in fact keep all those survivors, and all their skills. It even tracks how many playthroughs they've survived.. meaning if they die, they're probably gone forever.
