You can kill zombies
There are some special infected
That's it
What's different:
-Third Person
-Not a run and gun style game
-The zed don't turn into 28 Days Later at night, but there are special infected
-State Of Decay is more realistic in terms of the kind of tasks you need to accomplish, less run and gun missions and more of getting survivors and supplies that you need.
-You are in charge of basebuilding/management in State of Decay
-You play as multiple survivors from a random pool
-Missions in state of decay are generated based on what you need and what's in the world, there is a story in the story mode to go along with this though
-State of Decay gives you choices
-Weapons can be repaired in SOD
-Cars in SOD can be driven, kept and repaired
-All car locations in SOD are monitored since cars don't respawn and it is possible for you to destroy all of them
-You can loot the entire map of resources
-Build facilities in your base to make what you want, budget your building space as you can't build everything
-Recruit survivors with special skills needed to run the base.
-Offline simulation that simulates additional supply gathering and loss
Basically Dying light is an entirely linear run and gun with a lot of combat challenges, while State of Decay is more of a slow paced but methodical base-building with a bit of run and gun. State of Decay is a smaller game in terms of detail and polish but there is much more to do here in terms of actual survival.
Hope this helps. A lot of people use the phrase "like GTA but with zombies".
I'm not a fan of dying light or dead island, and I only played dying light for a couple of hours. I'm not going to beat up on the game and call it trash just because it's not my thing.
If you are a fan of The Walking Dead TV show, this is pretty much the walking dead game we never got. You have to search for ammo, building materials, food and meds, which sometimes it behooves you not to take. The game actually plays without you, if you say build this building it may take a half hour or an hour, when you shut the game off and come back in said time, it's going to be built, so that's an interesting aspect. Mind you the game only plays something like 24 hours without you.
Not everyone you pick up is a zombie killing machine, in fact some people are better left to the zombies or left in your base because they bring different skills, like a strong a ability to provide medical care.
Every character you pick up can become a zombie killing machine, but you just have to train them more, and run them around, and make them pop zombies in the face. Much like what we see in the walking dead, a lot of the characters who were weak got strong or aquired skills.
Kind of like how it would be in the real world, some characters get depressed or run away and you got to save them. In part this is just to add to the list of events, but brings you into the game a little more.
If your looking for more of a dying light experince as I mentioned and if you didn't play it, dead island is going to be your best bet. If your looking for something different, than I highly suggest picking the game up. It prolly will kill the first weekend you play it, you wont put it down.

Zombies in both games? You're kidding, I refuse to believe it. -- Alright, I get it. :)
Personally I don't remember ever experiencing the game jumping 28 days forward when night comes around, if you have seen this happening in Dying Light it definitely is strange... either that or I misunderstand what you're trying to say here. I don't think the zed mechanics do any jumping unless you're thinking of the much harder mobs that come out at night in Dying Light.
What you describe about missions being more realistic, less simple gun shoot outs, "go pick up this and that", and more getting supplies and finding survivors which has a function in the game progression, this definitely sounds good - and better than much of the Dying Light content.
Wow, I love that. There's none of that in Dying Light. I'm beginning to see how different the two games must be.
Do you mean I play multiple characters in the same game play-through and they're choisen randomly, maybe in between quests or levels?
I must say that all of this sounds awesome, it also sounds like SoD has a greater re-playability than Dying Light (although Dying Light can be replayed to an extent, but you'll usually do so more as a form of relaxation when you need to pass time and not do too much thinking).
Your reply is very helpful and I really appreciate it.
Thanks a lot for taking the time.
I agree, a game is not necessarily trash because I personallly don't enjoy that particular style or genre.
Dying Light was my very first zombie game - and pretty much the only zombie game I've played to date. I never played zombie games before because I didn't see the point in killing slow, sick people, but at least I now realize there can be a lot more to it than hack & slash.
I tried Dead Island for a few hours after completing Dyng Light, but I didn't really find it enjoyable. Maybe it was just too much of the same which I'd already played in Dying Light, and Dying Light seemed better anyway.
Very interesting aspect indeed, and innovative - I at least haven't seen something like this before.
Realistic multi-dimensional characters, I like that.
This is very unique for a game, I can see how you may in fact begin to really care about the NPCs at a more genuine level because they aren't static and pre-destined in everything they do.
I haven't had the opportunity to watch the Walking Dead TV show (from what I know it doesn't run on any TV stations in my country), but I've watched all the original Walking Dead movies, so I know a little about the basis for the show that way, and what you've described gives me some idea about it as well. (I do wish I could watch it, though.)
Reading these two posts by you and 'You Can Go Your Own Way', I have made up my mind. I simply have to try this game for myself, it seems to have so many layers and aspects that you don't find in any other game of this genre - that I know of anyway and I really like the depth and innovation you've described so well.
Thanks a lot for a well written and detailed reply, I could not have hoped for any better than what both of you have written in this thread.
That said, I have about 1000 hours in the game, and found it fun. Based on your computer specs, you may run into interesting bugs. I hardly ever saw the reported bugs because I have a high end gaming computer.
There are also mods for the game. And it's sort of easy to mod it yourself if you like.
I never played DL because your supposed to be a highly trained spec ops marine, but the game portrays you as a bumbling idiot that could not escape a wet paper bag. But to each their own. ;)
Like Willie said, remember this is a port and remaster of a Xbox Live Arcade title, which means the game was developed to fit within 2 gigabytes of data. The features are great and this is a very unique game but it is not a perfect game and a lot of it may be stretched thin.
