TRON 2.0

TRON 2.0

Sudden "Out of memory" Killer App error after the 3 light cycle arenas that include tanks
Hello programs, I don't know how active these discussions are but I've been having a blast playing Tron 2.0 with the Killer App mod. I got to this level where, after overclocking the system or something like that, you have to play a long level of light cycles, it's like playing 3 arenas but between each arena room you have to dodge some tanks.

So, the thing is that I did lose a few times, but the moment I was finishing the level, I go straight to the exit and once I touch the portal, instead of having a cutscene or a new level or anything of the sort, the game closed and a small window titled "Tron 2.0 Killer App Mod" showed the messaged "Out of memory". I've tried looking for that online, but the only answer I found is that it may happen when you load a save file that didn't have the mod installed, which is not my case as I have never played Tron 2.0 before, this was my first run (I only ran the game once at the very beginning so that it could create some necessary files and that's it, didn't even finish the tutorial then).

Any idea of what happened, or how to fix this? Thank you very much in advance!

You can definitely encounter that error when loading a saved game. In fact, I'm guessing you might have found this post talking about it: https://steamcommunity.com/app/327740/discussions/0/1797403972736334473/#c1797403972740236210

But I can't say I've ever heard of anyone encountering an "Out of memory" error while playing the game. This would be the first time.

I was going to suggest that, if you're playing with an integrated GPU, it might be caused by not setting the amount of memory that can be used by the iGPU high enough. Or that perhaps your Windows page file isn't large enough. Those would be possible reasons for running out of memory.

But then I saw the games you play on your Steam profile, and you've been playing some pretty demanding ones like Cyberpunk 2077. So if a game like that runs fine, I can't see TRON 2.0 actually running out of memory.

Unless you have more than one GPU in your computer, and other games are running on the dedicated GPU while TRON 2.0 is running on the integrated? There's a way in Windows 10 and 11 to specify which GPU a game should use, in the Settings app.

Other than that, there are only two other potential reasons this could happen, that I can think of, off the top of my head.

One is that, somehow, one of the game files has become corrupt. But that's pretty doubtful. Also, if you use Steam's feature to verify the integrity of the game files, it will delete the mod files.

The other possibility, is your current driver version for the GPU that TRON 2.0 is running on, isn't working that well with TRON 2.0.

This could make sense if the game is running on an Intel Xe GPU. Intel's newer GPUs don't have great support for older games, like ones that use DirectX 9. Which is what TRON 2.0 uses.

There's also reports online that Nvidia's latest drivers have become unstable. If you do a search online for "Nvidia drivers unstable" you'll see a lot of mentions.

Or maybe it was just a one-time glitch, that might not happen again?

Let me know if it does happen again, and perhaps something I've already mentioned might help.

Hey LDSO! Great to see that you're still around, love to see how passionate you are with this awesome game.

To tell you the truth, it seems to be a one time glitch. Thankfully, the game itselfs seems to have a sort of auto-save at the very start of that level, so I only had to retry the light cycles. I did die a bunch of times the first time, so it might be something related to me having to reload the level a number of times and then the game trying to load the next one.

It did happen again but in a very different situation, on another level where I was trying a pretty impossible jump and ended up reloading many times, until the game froze on the loading screen. But I get that that's the common error, so no sweat.

Other than that, the game is awesome and your Killer App mod is amazing. I only have one issue, and it's the fact that whenever I enter combat, the game lags like crazy. If enemies are around it's not an issue, until they see me and try to engage. There were some parts where it was not that bad, IIRC that Thorne's corruption level (the one that's infested of corruption) was smooth on some parts even if there were a lot of enemies.

But now I'm at the DataWraiths and it's pretty annoying to chase them with those phantom dashes while the game runs like a PDF file. Any idea about how can I fix it?
Thank you in advance and have a good day!

Thanks for the kind words. :)

Good to hear the "Out of memory" crash was probably a one-time thing.

The game performing poorly, when encountering enemies, happens if the frame rate is too high. If you limit TRON 2.0 to 90 FPS or less, the stuttering will go away.

In the next update to the Killer App Mod, a frame rate limiter will be added.

Also be aware that there's a bug in the AI code for the DataWraiths, that can cause the game to crash randomly while fighting them. Be prepared to save your game often.

I think I actually may have found a fix for TRON 2.0 crashing when fighting DataWraiths. I've played lengthy sessions in levels where you encounter the DataWraiths and the game didn't crash, for me. But maybe I never actually triggered the specific condition that causes the crash. Still can't be sure until I've tested it more thoroughly. Including on different computers, versions of Windows, and so on.

I see. I tried doing that, but for some reason, when I use the Nvidia control panel to do it, I click on "Apply" and a warning pops up saying "Access Denied". I've never encountered this situation before. Does it have anything to do with the Killer App?

EDIT: Nevermind, I got it to work. However, limiting the FPS doesn't seem to fix it at all for me. I tried with 90 and 60, but same result. Any other ideas?

Unfortunately, the Nvidia driver frame rate limiter used to work, but not any more. Nvidia changed something that broke it for TRON 2.0.

You'll have to use a different method. What's the refresh rate of your monitor?

If it's 90 Hz or lower, you can just turn on Synchronization (VSync) in the game. If your monitor is 100 Hz or higher, you could limit the refresh rate of your monitor in the Windows Settings app to 90 or 60 Hz and then enable Synchronization (VSync) in the game. Either way, you'll have to set the resolution you want again via the TRON 2.0 game launcher by clicking the Display button.

Or you could use RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS) as mentioned here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/327740/discussions/0/3191368254804230110/#c3191368254814950061

A lot of these quality-of-life issues that have cropped up since the last release of the mod, will be addressed in the next Killer App Mod update.

Seems like that did it! I changed the refresh rate in windows settings, already had VSync enabled, and after finishing the level I was in (that one still kept lagging like crazy) the game runs smooth like butter. You're a lifesaver man, I thought I'd have to finish the game suffering through the rest of the fights like this. Thank you!
