Crash At Loading Screen
I have the game downloaded to a custom gaming PC running Windows 10 and an Nvidia GTX 960, with both update patch and Killer App mod installed. Initially the game was running great, I got through the intro and the first area of the tutorial level, even had the time to program in my own custom Steam Controller scheme that works great. However, once I got to the data stream to the next area the game would crash behind the loading screen, leaving me unable to do anything but reboot the PC through ctrl+alt+del. When I tried to load from either an auto-save or a quick save from the main menu, the same crash would happen. I did try to meddle with the compatility settings in the Steam files, but this just seemed to make the game even more unstable, as well as incompatible with Big Picture Mode and the Controller.

I also noticed there was a bit of a hiccup whenever certain dialogue was being loaded in the tutorial level as well, possibly related to the loading issue.

Anyone know if this is a common issue or if there is a fix for this?

For any hiccups you're experiencing, you may have the "Precache assets" setting in the options turned off. Turning it on will help with that.

The game can hang sometimes when loading another level. This can happen on either the vanilla or modded version. It's usually caused by, what I believe, is a memory leak bug (which was never fixed) that occurs if you reload the same saved game many times in succession.

But since it sounds like you just started the game, and have no prior saves, this would be a different situation.

I'd try starting over, and see if the crash happens again. Rather than loading one of the saves, which could have been corrupted when the game crashed and you had to restart. If it does crash again, we can try and figure it out from there.

I did try this yes. The first time I played I got as far as to the disc training area, then committed suicide to test the save/load shortcuts in my controller configuration. That was the first time it crashed. Every time I restarted the game after however I couldn't even get past the first loading screen.

I will try the precaching, but it seems like the memory leak bug is to blame. Hopefully this can be patched in the future as I remember the first time I played the original game I died many, many times, especially in difficult spots, and if the bug is causing the game to corrupt then it will make for a very frustrating experience.

Hmm, I didn't mean to create the impression that the game locking up during a level load will automatically cause a save to corrupt. In fact, I've never had a save become corrupt that way. I'm only raising it as a possibility - that happened by some fluke, in this particular case - since you're saying the game crashes when you load a save.

Let me know if, after starting over and trying to make it to the disc training again, you continue to have any issues.

Any remaining issues in the game will likely never be patched. Though I'm trying to fix what I can through the Killer App Mod. The only hope for updates is that, just maybe, GOG will update the game some day when they sell it on their site. And then Disney will make that version, eventually, available on Steam.

I did a complete clean reinstall of the game (deleted all assets from Steam folders, reinstalled the game and mod) and dinked around a little in the tutorials, and everything seems to be running much better! How peculiar, I don't think I changed anything from what I did previously. Well, knock on wood, I'll keep playing around with it for a while and if anything happens to mess up again I'll drop you a message.
