It'd be very convenient for a game like this that has such long battles. I've been doing well in a campaign but had to quit mid-battle because I had -stuff to do-.
The difference between a save state and a quicksave or manual save is that the save state is erased once its loaded, whereas quicksaves and manual saves aren't.
Regardless, most rogue-likes have save states built into them, so you can leave the game whenever you want and come back to where you left off.
I could understand having to repeat the mission from before you began it if you left the game without saving, but for your entire game to be erased if you leave is ridiculous. Unless you die in a rogue-like, you shouldn't lose your progress.
Unfortunately, it seems you'll need to back up your save files regularly if you have a busy schedule and might have to leave the game before you complete whatever mission you're currently on. That's not save scumming, that's fixing a problem the developer doesn't want to deal with and has attempted to pass off as a "feature."
