FreeCol vs Original Colonization
There's no reason I can see why you'd want to pay for the originial colonization (this game) when you could play FreeCol instead.

Discuss.

Dont forget there is a pretty solid mod to make the new civ4 col play just like this title did. Nightdive may have bought the rights, but someone somewhere seems to have edited it between them purchasing it and us playing it. seems like all these titles are a bit off comperared to their originals, I still own their originals...

Its almost like these new fellas are distributing earlier versions that what were released, but im not stating that as a fact. I'm just saying, they dont seem to have the same exact released version that I have on cdrom.

also releasing the dos box version was a huge mistake as the windows version has a patch that makes it compatibale with windows xp and in turn win7... it was a free patch called col95.exe that they released and distributed freely for a while on their website and later I was even able to contact them directly and request a copy of the patch. So it is out their. Col win has much better graphic resolution and hotkeys than the dos version ever had... to release the dos version here today on steam honestly seems like a poor choice as it was the least favored version even when they were still being sold.

Interesting what you said about the windows patch with better resolution. I like the game the way it is, but would like to see the enhanced version :)

I still play this game quite often, my original disks for it aren't usable anymore so I got the steam version... This is one of the games that got me interested in computers as a teen and I've tried playing every clone/remake of the game without any being as fun... I've come to expect colonization to act a certain way and when it doesn't I can't bring myself to keep playing

This is why I paid for it over playing freecol

I also still play Civilization II, Civ3 and newer changed too much and I feel they aren't as fun as 1 and 2

Kinda agree on Civilisation II, except:
I found freeciv outright better (unlike freecol): multiplayer similtaneous turns, optional hex maps, lots of game customisation.
Civ 5 is a different game to earlier civs and at least worth a try, it plays different, i had different fun. I think it learned from freeciv.

Where I can find this mod? im 100% interested

I been playing Col since the 90´s and its by far the game I have played most. The new version and freeCol are nice games but they are different an they are played different than the original one.

I still play the original sometimes and for me its like playing a card solitarie, so when this version was released I bought it just for have it on steam.

I wish also that they based the steam version in the Win version which had better resolution.

I appreciate Freecol but it is not the same experience. The original colonization is still lightyears better than Freecol: the behavior of the indians are completely different in both versions, only the orginal colonization has the amazing soundtrack, battle system is better especially the sea combat, price changes in europe.

But Freecol is decent and way better than the remake civ4 colonization. Because the remake is utterly ♥♥♥♥.

It's a lot easier to find in my steam games list than in my pile o' disks (especially considering my lack of a floppy drive) or horribly disorganised and unconsolidated dosgames folders. Plus, maybe it's better integrated with the steam overlay so I can deal with people who insist on talking to me while I play more easily. Of course, the guy who kept on interrupting my free time with his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ every single ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ day is no longer on my friends list, so I haven't had the chance to test it, but hey, the people I actually like talking to might try when I'm in colonization, so maybe I'll find out some time soon.

Today in steam forums I learned that once something gets to be twenty years old it's okay to download it for free or think that a fiver is too much to drop for it

Or I'm sorry did the gameplay change and suddenly now it's not engaging and/or fun

If you learned it in a forum and not from "officials" or "publishers" then you and they are soarly mistaken and you can be sued for thousands of dollars. Copyright remains copyright for 75 years not 20 years. Thus you are vilating the law downloading it for free. Just FYI you can do whatever you please but the do make "examples" out of some people to show that it is possible to be sured for what you are doing.

I may still have 4 floppy disks of colonization. There were 3 turn based games for me! civilization I, colonizaton and genghis khan of Koei. Three of them was enough to travel back in time!! I

I'm not Roar, but I'm about 95% sure that comment was sarcasm.
