I think this was a feature on older worms games, and it was pretty great one at that. Is it at all possible to do the same here?

No, but you can use other services like NVIDIA GameStream™ Co-op to include 1 other person online on the local option.

They need to implement this feature. Its one of the reasons I bought the game, I thought it'd be a given
