- I ask why they are focus firing on me after I notice it happening
- they deny that they are
- I again point out that attacking the person in last place (or close to) isn't a smart move strategically, especially given that a worm from a much stronger team is nearby
- they attack me again
- I point out once again that it's lame behavior
- they spew out some excuse as to why they are focus firing on me (even though they just told me they weren't a minute or so ago), such as the fact that I use turrets and magnets and girders and don't leave myself exposed like a moron
- they continue to do everything they possibly can to kill me, even if it involves hurting their own worms, or outright killing their self and losing the game
- they then make smug comments in the chat or via voice chat
- I want to murder them IRL
There's not much that can be done about it aside from trying to reason with people. They think that defending myself is lame, yet spamming drones and dropping bunker busters isn't. That's some funny rationale there.
Why? Because the idiots you meet when you play a competitve game to death nearly all seem to be insecure internet tough guys who love being anonymous and think their trash talk makes them some kind of undisputed alpha-male - who feed off of competition and love e-sports and all this bollocks. By playing enough of the game and establishing myself at high rank (however inadvertently) results in me meeting these sad basement dwellers on a regular basis due to the small community (another unfortunate problem). Fair enough if you can thrive on competitive play and also be well-mannered and humble (wouldn't that be nice) but those kind of people in online games just seem to be in the minority as there's no 'threat of retribution' if it were by not being in the physical world.
Personal rant over, I'm not sure if FFA games are as full of trash talk as 1v1 but I bet when an issue like you mention comes to head it probably happens there as well. I've played and enjoyed many FFA RTS games in the past with a group of friends and it's nearly always been awesome as you respect each other and the attacking flow of the game is mostly balanced.
So unfortunately unless you have a group of friends you can play with on a regular basis, I wouldn't trust open FFA games and that's exactly why I don't play them.
As far as FFA goes, I keep pointing to the older Worms games and how people back then (and even now) have a better sense of 'Worms etiquette.' In W:A you're not likely to find randoms who are going to team up on you for the entirety of a match, even in a scheme with no rules. In the newer titles the player base is obviously much younger and they don't give a damn about playing fair or even really exercising intelligent strategy in order to win a game. They think it is funny when they deny someone (who is clearly better than they are) of a win, and will do whatever it takes to see that it happens.
Being focused on makes sense if you are in first or second place, but by the time you are in last place HP-wise, they should just move on because attacking the team with more HP simply MAKES SENSE if they are playing to win, and if you're not playing a match of Worms to win the game, why are you even playing? That's what Worms is all about. You want to control the last team standing. Passing up other worms/teams just to single one player out is obnoxious and counter-productive. I've been playing Worms for so long that ABL is kind of second nature, and I think it's a shame that I'd even need to specify it or even have to DEFINE WHAT IT MEANS. So sad.
I haven't encountered much trash talk in WMD aside from those individuals who team up to kill me, and only when it is clear that I cannot possibly defend myself and that they have a sure chance of killing me off. I also get a lot of trash talk from better players who think they are Worms gods they get super salty when they lose, even when the scheme I am hosting is about as fair as it can possibly be... no crates, no vehicles, no cheesy weapons like bunker busters and air strikes, etc. My favorite comment is: "If crafting was on you'd be dead!" lmao... So in other words, you're telling me that you need to rely on a personal handicap system to beat me instead of traditional Worms skills? Cool story bro.
That said, I do get salty when I lose sometimes because a lot of losses come from nothing other than pure luck... a lucky crate, a lucky vehicle drop, people spamming drones and getting too many crafting crates, etc. If I genuinely get outplayed I cannot be mad about that but 90%+ of my losses are from pure luck / randomness. Yesterday I was playing a 6 player FFA game that I dominated the whole time and it got close to sudden death and some guy got an OMG Strike in a crate... completely obliterated my whole team + the best (and fortified) position on the map.
I dunno, you made yourself that reputation, now you have to deal with the consequences.
You are guilty of this yourself. I've played in FFA matches in which you participated along with the others in focus firing me.
I see that everyone here is right in there own ways and there is only one thing i can suggest.
'Try not to attract attention.' I myself am a ropper and i do share the same issue but have not delt with the same situation.
When they see you pull off a skilled move like a Gernade trickshot or dealing big damage in one blow they would want to target you because they think you are a threat to their chances of winning.
newbies often do the things that you have discribed because they dont know how to win effectively like you and i do. what they do is try to damage the oppenent at any cost.
This leads to self damage and targetting.
When i see the threads the community does have a point. To me, you are everywhere
on most discusions and on some matches. so there are some people who do know about you and your experience in worms.
About the people that have met you and do this aswell they are just rude.
Joined a lobby that said "MODE PRO"
...looked at the settings and it was anything but pro. 4 jetpacks, 5 ropes, 2 dynamite, banana bomb, holy hand grenade, air strike, bunker buster, 2 homing missiles, lots of crafting ingredients, lots of crate drops, lots of vehicle drops...I played anyway because nothing else was hosted.
And from the very first turn the two guys in the game aside from me teamed up on me until I was dead. There was absolutely nothing that I could do to defend against it aside from drag it out. They also talked a bunch before the game but wouldn't say anything at all during the game, then afterwards they were being smug pricks and saying that "it was a pleasure" and that I was a noob because I used girders and sentry guns.
Most of the WMD player base is a bunch of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idiots.
