Stars over ship

Sorry for dumb question but I haven't been able to find an answer....What are the stars over the ships for and what effect do they have?

They signify how many kills you have to your name. You lose them when you die, and I think they effect how scared of you enemy ships are. When you have 6 kills it becomes a skull and your allies will follow you for free when they aren't busy doing something else...

They also give you a crit bonus.

Yep. Even if you use the Fast Travel option.

I had five stars, quit the game, continued, and now I only have one.

I didn't die or change ships.

Is there a special way to save/quit?

I'm playing the non-Steam version so the save is local.

yes, if you quit, you need to re-earn your stars, as are "local" to the area you are in.The game auto-saves, frequently,whether steam or Gog version.

no. it`s just a kill streak, no biggy really, just a little "extra".
