How to know the right place to build Lighthouses?
I build one as per the quest on a place the cursor is green, and it immediately says 'failed to build lighthouse', I then lose the quest but it builds a lighthouse there anyway. Help?

If it's a quest from a town, you have to build it near the town.

You built it too far from the town, you have to build them close to the town that gave the quest. But not too close I guess since it does say not to or it will prevent growth.

That's exactly what happened with my first Lighthouse so I built the next ones further away. Too far it seems.

Is there a way to work out the right place, I haven't gotten one right yet!

I think if you build the lighthouse at a place where the town is still on-screen as well, you won't go far wrong.
Each time a town grows (up to level 10 with enough room), it gets a new building. If you have cramped it with lighthouse or guard tower, that might limit the level it can reach.

How do you start to build? I got the cargo in my ship, but I can't find out how to build

You will have a new skill icon in the skill bar "Build Lighthouse". Click that near coast and sweep the cursor around until it changes colour indicating you can build there. If the cursor is yellow you just need to get closer to the spot.
