I prefer to play my maps on a private server rather than single player. I'm not sure if single player locks out the other factions once you have selected your starting faction. Playing on a private server keeps the starting zones for other factions open, since you may want to invite other players to play your map, or start another character using a different faction on the same map. There is a pinned post in Forums explaining how to set up a private server.
I have to say that the support (official and unofficial) for this game is stellar. And I've been gaming for over two decades!
Look at Marauders bigworld map, way more than 385 zones.
