Binding skills to 360 controller
I read through forum posts regarding the issue i'm having but found no solution. When trying to bind Chain shot to the Y button or any other it flashes a message of success. I then it shows the Y button icon on the skill until I pick up the controller and use the button. The icon then disappears without firing until I shake the mouse then it reappears but its just rinse and repeat using clicking the skill with the mouse as a work around. But honestly for the time being i just avoid using the skill if at all possible I thought it would bind itself automatically but as i said even manually binding it to any button doesn't seem to work. As a side note trying to rebind the auto bound skills for A & B does not work either although that isn't an issue everything would be fine if chain shot & future skills automatically had a button assigned like A & B do. enjoying the short time I have played very much thx for making a relaxing & enjoyable game

I am guessing you right-click on icons to bind them? There are two separate ways of rebinding keys. You need to do everything through the controller. Don't use the mouse at all. Use the D-Pad's left/right keys to interact with the scroll bar. Note the tooltip that pops up, showing you which key to press to rebind each skill.

Would it be possible to bind also the 360s back and start keys? Also a third one when you press down the d-pad. I miss being able to assign these in the game.

It will be a while still before I get started on the next project. There is still quite a bit I want to add to Windward. But hey, if you like it, gift a copy to a friend that you think may enjoy it. ;)

@Xintar: Start and Back keys are interpreted differently on controllers. The 360 controller will let you do it just fine, but NVidia Shield controller won't, for example. I tried to keep it uniform.

I have an original 360 controller bought with my console and these two keys cannot be bound to abilities on the taskbar.

I use a wireless 360 controller / receiver and I'm really enjoying the game on the big screen. I'm at the point I need more binding options on the controller or a keyboard is forced into my rotation. Not a deal breaker but there seems to be enough buttons on the controller if only they would bind. My binding experience so far has been the following:
  • I am able to bind L3 and R3
  • I would like to but cannot bind Back, Start, LB(1) or RB(1)
  • D-pad UP does not clear the binding of a selected slot
  • Trying to bind Back, Start, LB(1) or RB(1) to a slot with an existing binding clears that slot of the binding
  • D-pad directions do not bind
With regards to OP Skull_Reaver's experience:

The "bind-loop" he describes happened to me two nights ago with my Y button. Unlike OP I only use(d) the controller to rebind. The strangest thing about the bug, however, is that tonight as I make sure of my points for this post the Y button binds well enough but the X button will now create the loop.

My progression to recreate this bug is D-pad RIGHT / LEFT to slot, X to initiate bind, X to assign to slot, receive message of success, I see the slot bound to X, the 'Press any button to bind..." message comes back and I'm forced to rebind the slot.

I can get out of the loop and maintain the slot bind to X by pressing X and D-pad RIGHT / LEFT at the same time which moves to a different slot. The new slot is assigned X as well as the previous slot but I can rebind the new slot to a button that does not loop (A, B, Y, L3, R3) and all is well.

I would greatly enjoy and appreciate additional binding options to the current A, B, X, Y, L3, and R3 choices on my controller. Hopefully some of this lengthy post will help in that outcome. Thank you for your time and for the game!

That is correctly reported Holo :)

I successfylly bind X to an ability by pressing it once, then holding it down as i also press B and then release both.

Would also be nice with some combination bindings. Like press X and RT together to do xxx.
But if i can assign Start and Back that also helps. This game is so much better with a gamepad :).

EDIT:
But I also would like in the option to be able to choose steering/navigation but 1. rudder or 2. direction. I find myself still intuvily trying to navigate as i had a rudder in battles.

A rudder option would be the most wanted option i think.

I fixed it on my end, so you will see the fix live tonight.

P.S. Start and Back buttons are now also bind-able.

BACK and START buttons now bind and the loop is gone. Thank you for the fixes.

I figure this would be as good a place to comment on other controller related bugs I'm seeing rather than start a new discussion:

  • "Advance Quest" = no controller button input
When attempting to complete a "message in a bottle" mission by selecting 'Advance Quest' the mission will continue to the next step (or end) but the controller will stop recognizing button input. The Left stick will still allow me to move around menus but I cannot select or interact with anything or use the D-pad.

Today this has happened almost every time I've selected 'Advance Quest' on the message item within the inventory screen. I also find the bug is more likely to happen when the quest is completed. It has happened while I'm sailing or in port.

I must disconnect then reconnect to the game server for the controller to work properly again.

  • Rumble does not stop
I believe the rumble function within the controller activates when either I'm rammed, ram someone, an exploding barrel goes off near me or when ships explode near me. I can't be sure of all those triggers but I plan on taking note as I play more.

Three times now when the rumble function has activated it persists indefinitely until I remove the batteries from the controller. Once the batteries are inserted again everything works normally.

I post these things for informative purposes only. Please know I appreciate the time you've put into your game and the community. I've not experienced being able to post feedback directly to the creator of something I enjoy to then receive a responce. Thanks again.

Thanks for bringing the Advance the Quest bug to my attention. I've fixed it on my end, so it will be resolved in the next update.

For the rumble bug I will need to know more details -- how can I reproduce it?
Holo Jun 1, 2015 @ 7:52pm
The fix worked great for Advance the Quest and I thank you. I ran into the bug again tonight, however, by accepting the mission in a bottle quest this time. I was in port with the inventory window open.

The rumble bug has not happened again for me in two nights of play. I've felt rumble while firing, being rammed and near explosions but it ended as it should in all cases. If it happens again I will be as detailed as possible in my post here.

Thanks again for the contiuned controller support.
