Best bet for missions requiring a kaboom is to bring a rocket launcher or mortar sort of thing. I forget what they're called, haven't played this game in a few weeks. Grenade launcher on the M16 might also work for some targets.
EDIT:
After some trial and error this is what I have discovered... certain targets (the crate of drugs) need you to be within "satchel-placement" distance when they explode in order to trigger the mission to advance. So get close before you use a grenade or LAW. Other targets (radar trucks, etc.) don't need you to get close enough to "identify" them and drop a satchel, you can shoot them with a LAW from like a mile away no problem. So far I think the crate of drugs is the only one that requires you to stand so close but I still have the last two countries to play.
Try also destroying the boxes labeled "AK47" or whatever.
