Tangerine Antarctic - Isometric prototype. Imperial Bedroom.

Thanks a ton for the great question. I’ll try to give you an idea why we switched from isometric view to 3rd person. While doing my utmost to avoid any spoilers.

Tangerine Antarctic is a living world. While you’re stranded in this off-season hotel, things keep happening non-stop. Dead bodies are found. Parties and afterparties abound. People and objects disappear. While the gym is still open and the spa hides some incredible guests. This is not a static place where you are just sent to do the post-mortem. No. Stuff happens. Your actions matter. And making a true detective’s RPG is all about giving you more of this luxurious freedom, detective. To solve the murders, to live your best life, or simply save the future.

First we had a whole dynamic and branching crime story mapped out with a very wide brush. And at the same time we started designing and producing the first underground level of the Tangerine Antarctic hotel. Designing the gameplay. Populating this Imperial Bedroom and other locations with characters. Writing the dialogues. Testing the role-playing systems. This is where the game begins.

We never wanted to create a spiritual successor to Disco Elysium or, Stalin forbid, some imaginary Disco Elysium 2. Nor did we want to simply polish the formula, to deliver you Disco Elysium 1.2 – once again with a huge painted world map. You know what I mean.

We wanted to make the game some of us wished to be making when we were tied down delivering Disco Elysium and the Final Cut. A true detective’s RPG that gives you a fresh and fun role-playing system while respecting your time. A game that you wish was longer. Not shorter.

My baseline is that we’re making a player-first RPG. Isometric perspective just wasn't a good enough tool for you to explore the most luxurious hotel of the world in 2086. It would have been a comfort zone for us. A comfort zone is not a safe space to be. Especially when you are dealing with murderers. And you’ll be dealing with them a lot.

So this is it. Change felt good. And now when we have most of this thrilling hotel mapped out I can already tell: it was inevitable. There was no other way for us to deliver you something really fresh and new. A true detective’s RPG.

Added bonus: when we freed our dialogue reel system from isometric view, writing and game design got so much easier and fun. We’ll sure show off something quite soon.

Tangerine Antarctic – a player-first true detective RPG with a branching story, where your choices are everything.

Our community manager asked one of the writers for a devblog post. This is the completely honest and accurate report he got in reply.

I’m not forwarding any fucking memes. The buck stops here.

I open the calendar, see a meeting that has fuck-all to do with me, and start pestering someone on WhatsApp to send me the link. Which they do, with a vaguely upbeat hesitance.

The sliding camera cover on my laptop is half open, exposing a quarter of my greasy hair. I close it for a second but then uncover it again.

“Nice of you to join us,” says someone. “We were just discussing…” and they go on explaining whatever the fuck they were discussing. I nod approvingly, bless the meeting with a cross gesture like a priest, and leave.

Caffeine. I cook a cup of double espresso with my moka pot, using Red Bull instead of water. Great stuff, gets me pumped up for my shift. I log on to Jira and proceed to move random tickets from Not Started to In Progress to In Review to Finished. This is how work gets done, bitches, 34 hours worth of tickets solved in one minute.

All the apps are blinking with memes, 317 in total. Not forwarding any of them. Not a single fucking one. I am the motherfucking last stand — the Three Gorges Dam. In this life you can be an asshole or a simp, and good guys finish last. Moving the tickets is the easiest hustle ever, so yeah, no empathy for losers moaning about crunch time.

I finish a few more tickets. It’s almost half past noon, so I should get dressed if I want to retain my morning-person credentials. I consider intellectual honesty to be very important.

Our Art Director, Timo Albert, said it best: “Tangerine Antarctic is the name of the hotel you wake up in. Trapped there by a blizzard, you’ll dig through walls of snow and silence to solve a string of murders. And Tangerine Antarctic isn’t just a place. It’s one of the key characters in this true detective’s RPG.”

The Tangerine Antarctic hotel is designed by renowned architect Kaur Stöör, who brings his expertise in mountain architecture to Antarctica. We’ll show more of it soon. The place is mad even by the standards of 2086. It’s a refuge for the powerful, the secretive, and the plain strange. You should not be there. But what can you do? Murders don’t solve themselves. It takes a detective or two!

I understand that localization may not be at the top of your roadmap, but for many Ukrainian players it would be an important step to improve their gaming experience. Really?

Honestly just lost interest to this game now that they re-branded the name (for what seems to be no reason), and changed it to a third person game, really can't think this as a Disco Elysium "successor" anymore. Something like Rue Valley at least keeps the perspective and artistic similarity. It doesn't really need to be an exact copy, but it feels like it just lost all charm it had for me....
