What is the difference between a free LC and a patch?
If even CA start using the term free LC, can someone tell me what the difference is?

Nothing really. Stuff that people normally wouldn't consider being included in a patch.

its when they feel like they give you something free that they could have charged money for

Yep. Something like a free faction for example.

LC is additional game content not included in or intended for the initial game upon release and often but not allways involves extra charges.

A Patch fixes something that is not working as intended or expected and sometimes adds new content and is commonly free.

For CA, Free LC means they are adding something new (like new units, new factions, new mechanics, etc.) while patch means they are repairing, optimizing or balancing stuff that is not working like they intended.
