How to help the WRE survive

Really bothers me that the WRE gets annihilated so early in the game.
If I can get 50 turns in on VH without losing a single settlement (obvious had a few settlements sacked), in fact securing Africa and Britain, why can’t the AI?

I’ve tried giving them unlimited cash, tried killing off majority of the hordes for them, I really feel the WRE should do a lot better as the AI
Anyone know of any mods that doesn’t affect any factions that will just make the WRE survive longer or maybe actually be a threat rather than free land for whoever wants it.

The Western Roman empire historically even during Attilas prime was able to beat him and hold their borders but by the time Attila is in the game WRE is nothing. Even the Eastern empire has a hard time with so many enemy hordes and factions by Constantinople.

My ERE gets eaten by sassanids not hordes, well mostly by sassanids. WRE has a tendancy to end up in corsica/sardinia

What exactly does the immigration trait do for the WRE? Not too sure how it works,

In my very hard play through of WRE the ERE hung in there until about 100 turns in and then it just seems the entire middle east mounted an invasion on them and pushed them all the way back to Constantinople.

But I believe that WRE as AI should be able to hold atleast the Italian peninsula and possibly even most of Spain.

theres a mod on total war center that makes the 2 roman factions more powerful not sure on its name though
