Dogs are broken...
Good afternoon everyone, I've been playing Total War: Attila since it came out, and other than the glaring optimization problems, I've loved the game. The setting's deep, immersive and fun, and the units and armies are the coolest yet seen in a Total War game... However, let me get to the point. DOGS ARE BROKEN.

People say to keep your units still and they'll destroy the dogs... Ok, fine, but when you click "attack" on the dogs, they rush the handlers, and proceed to get shredded by hundreds of mini Cliffords with spiked collars...

Anyways, I know they're fairly easy to counter, but its ridiculous how strong they are when your units are moving. 2 units of dogs destroyed 4 heavily armoured units: 2 comitatensis legionaries and 2 Cornutes seniores.... WHY THE HECK can dogs kill ARMOURED troops? I mean common seriously? It's not like their teeth can break shields and melt armour.

Dogs is a lot weaker than in rome 2 though. Also a lot cheaper.

that issues was snce rome 2

In rome 2 though, ALL troops had heavier armour/higher health and fought better against dogs as a result. I like the damage model in Attila, but the dogs are just ridiculous.

yeah the are sometimes annoying if the enemy comes with 10 dogs and kill my heavy units or kill all my archers.... and when i use the dogs the do nothing
I always use dogs to counter cavalry or archers. Just the job. Never found them very good against heavies though.

Send your horses after the dogs, and if you see the dogs coming, halt your troops and have them form up. As for how they can kill armored troops, consider that dogs are actually pretty damn dangerous, and have ways of getting past armor, mainly by going for the spots that aren't armored, like throats, joints, etc. You can't protect every single part of your body with armor, or you wouldn't be able to move at all.

Fenton for the win.

We are not talking about pet dogs here. As long as the neck of a warrior is exposed he is easy prey for trained wardogs. There is a reason dogs were used in battles. They are agile, fast and extremely vicious when hungry. Before any battle, handlers would starve their dogs to bring out that viciousness. Any man would be intimidated when faced with such a beast.

The over abundance of wardogs is an early game issue and is because the ai will not have built up to the point where it can recruit enough of a variety from its starting settlement, it prevents the ai from sending 19 units of spear levies with a general. It is the same as the over abundance of bottom tier skirmishers in R2. Once you get past the beginning of the game the wardog heavy armies should stop showing up.

Thats because you're not using Radious's dog mod.

Only problem I've encounted with AI Dogs is that they will run through your stop gap units and attack your archers on the walls. I had them blow through three cohorts which were holding the gate gap and just destroy my archers .

Dogs should always attack the first enemy they come into contact with upon release.

Then again I also remember several battles where I had a defensive testudo Legito suddenly move from their tight square to standing in a long straight line for some god forsake reason when defending a gap. AI does some wack things during a siege, not to mention the entire 'catching on corners' that units do in cities.

The only good counter I've found to dogs in cavalry, they don't seem to do much to them. I feel kinda ♥♥♥♥♥♥ since I've won multiplayer games using only dogs XD

Cavalry, and at least in Rome II, infantry with a heavy defense rating. Some heavy spearmen should stop dogs in their tracks. Luckily for the dogs, there aren't many units with high enough defense values in Attila to fend them off.

There is no way dog can beat average man today if u give him shield and spear. To beat warrior back than lol.

dogs are very easy to beat, just place some high armor units in front or trample them with cav and they will be gone in seconds.
