That's exactly my point. A medium melee shield unit should NOT be "upgraded" into a shock troop. That's not an upgrade, that's a replacement, and a stupid one. And, now that I think about it, not even a historically accurate one, so that's not it. Guess CA can't fix things without breaking something else.
Yeah, no kidding. I didn't even notice the Brigands turned into mounted skirmishers with half the ammo.
Also, did a little googling and it seems like there are a few mods out there that fix these issues for specific factions, including the Goths.
It kills the economy of most factions by the time you're 80+ turns in too, because upkeep gets completely out of hand if you upgrade every single old unit and are adding new armies as well. Cheap, low upkeep untis serve purposes as much as the units they upgrade into. CA seems to have missed that detail.
Heres an idea. How about giving the player choice and letting them play however they want like in previous Total War games. No? Silly me.
Just like roman generals upgrade to cavalry - you should be given a choice of cavalry or infantry. Cavalry gets sniped by enemy arty in like 2-3 salvos unless you move em around - it is silly
