Turn 1 - They Prepared for War
Now as you have probably noticed looking at the map, that the most immediate threat you face are the Visigoths. Followed by the Ostrogoths who are lurking in the North Western sector of your empire. What we fail to take into account though is the mighty Sassanid Empire. When I say "fail to take into account", what I mean is that we have noticed them, but that gamers tend not to bother with them early on into the game since they remain relatively docile at first. BIG Mistake. What we must remember is that the Sassanids not only have a vast array of client states, but that each client state generates a significant amount of gold for the Sas coffers. Also, if you view the picture beneath, you can see that from their point of view, they have two armies ready to respond to a possible attack. However, only one of those armies is able to reinforce Nisibis, whilst the other can only support via forced march. So this is why I would like you guys to follow the steps I took initially at turn 1.

Step 1 - Send your North Western Army - Legio IV Flavia Felix towards Mercianopolis, then have them recruit 2 spear infantry. Notice that you also have Legio XI Claudia based in Constantinopolis. Leave them there and have them recruit 2 spears as well.

Step 2 - Head on up to Armenia and arrange a marriage with them. Their daughter is very wealthy and would benefit your dynasty. Also, Armenia has a very strategic position on the mp for this specific strategy in that it is literally guarding your North Eastern Border against Sassanid clients trying to attack you. If you end your non-aggression pact with the Sassanids whom they are at war with and arrange a marriage with them, they will gladly accept for a measly 100 gold in return. Accept this offer and then proceed to step 3.

Step 3 - Now head over to your eastern provinces. As you can see from the screenshot above, you have 2 armies in the North and Central sector of your eastern borders - Legios XXII Fulminata based in Melitene and Legio III Parthica based in Amida. Have these two legions head straight for Nisibis. Notice that you have 6700 Solidus (Money) in your treasury. Have Legio III Parthica recruit all the mercenaries available before you enter Sassanid lands. Once done, declare war on the Sassanids and take Nisibis with Legio III Parthica. As an option, you can also send XXII Fulminata for march to support your assault. This will help to prevent any lose of whole units being eliminated due to combat. Once the city is yours, do whatever you must to it. I tend loot and cccupy Mesopotamia, but you can raze it too. My advice though is for you not to raze any of their cities yet until you have secured Nisibis, Ctesiphon, Arbela and Meshan. These areas can be used to help replenish your troops once they have completed their turns.

You also have three other armies to the south of Edessa, Legio III Cyrenaica in Nova Trajana Bostra and Legio X Frentensis in Aiela Capitolina with Legio II Traiana in Alexandria. Send all three towards Nisibis.

Step 4 - If you now view your income, you should have just over 4800+ gold left from the 8000 you previously had. You can use this amount to find any spot on the campaign map where you can build fields or buildings or your choice. I prefer to build one cattle field in Thrace, one Horse Breeder in Dardania, one Sheep Pen in Asia and one Wheat Field in Amida. If you've done this precisely, you should have about 103 left in your treasury. However, this all depends entirely on what buildings you've chosen.

Step 5 - Place your Emperor as Governor of Thrace, his heir as governor of Syria and Eutropius as governor of Egypt. Have them all set edicts to Byzantine urbanisation. Then end turn.
Turn 2 - On this turn, you should have already been attacked by the Visigoths either at Trimontium or Scupi. If you faught the battles yourself and managed to deal 400+ casualties to the Visigoth army, well done. As long as you've tried to take out their catapults, you should be OK. If not, don't worry. Simply auto resolve. What I found is that if you can destroy the general's unit, the battle usually tips in your favour. So if you have your cav still available, I recommend doing this. The Gepids or the Ostrogoths might have even declared war on you and may have attacked the city of Marcenopolis or Trimontium. If they have, try to destroy as much of their armies as possible. Usually, its the Ostrogoths who attack first, followed by the Gepids.
Also, you should now have taken Nisibis with Legio III Parthica and have Legio XXII Fulminata return to a normal stance near or outside Nisibis. You should move your other armies towards Nisibis as quickly as possible since the Sassanids will attack the next turn. Be prepared to face a full stack along with a half stack. You can either auto resolve or engage them on the battlefield. Either way, you should win this.
-Watch as they send 2-5 stacks against your army.
-Form Testudos at every entrance of the camp and watch as they all die to your towers as not a single persian gets past your wall of shields and blades.
-Send your cavalry to chase down the routing targets
-Watch in awe as you get less than 300 casualties and almost all of their armies are destroyed, recruit the captured men to replenish your own army back to full and finish them off, raze settlements whenever you can.
It works well for V.Hard campaigns since you will be attacked several times in the Balkans by Visigoth, Ostrogoths and Gepids during the first 3 turns. I advise using the garrison doubled mod especially since it gives you a fairly decent chance of defending your settlements. ;)
you wrote a tips section on a hard campaign when your using mods to make the game significantly easier for yourself? with those mods you shouldnt even need these tips. those mods are quite literally cheats.
I focused on 4 regions near Thracia. Merged 4 armies and disbanded the rest. Took out the Visigoths at turn 3-4, made peace with the Huns turn 1 (♥♥♥♥♥♥ if I know how I managed that) followed by marring my emperor to their daughter.
My empire looks exactly like it does at the start of Medieval 2 as the Byzantines. I took this approach and now with so much cash I am unstoppable. Plus having 4 legit children as well, assassinating my heir (adopted brother) I'm in full control! Nobody can stand close to me now.
Maybe I should quit and just play as the WRE?
EDIT: just realized how insane my income and treasury is....
"I'm close to turn 90 on Very Hard as ERE. I have over 2mill of gold plus 128k per turn."
nica hacks bro
It's not hard mate. ERE is very easy. A lot of people can do it...
im at 415 AD and have just murdered and subjugated sassanids.
i have never had over 15000 gold and 6000 profit.
guarding 2 borders with full stacks and fighting with 3-4 over long front.
200k gold? nice hacks.
either that or youre playin on eazymod
You suck. I was being nice but you want to be a jerk. You're not very good lol its not hard playing as the ERE is very, VERY simple.
