Can I split my armies?

I want to cut my army in half and send it towards a different target, I have a commander ready to step in and take control of the "new" army but I cant seem to figure out how to split?

So have the general with the army, put another general without an army next t them. Select one of them and right click on the other, a screen will pop up which lets you send units between the two armies. Think that's the only way of doing it

Theyre deep in enemy terretory, I cant just pop up an army...

Well then no you can't split them without having a general to move them to there already, one of the biggest drawbacks of the "you must have a general to have an army" thing

Conventional armies can't, they can only create new armies at a settlement, but the "horde" types can if migrating by setting up camp and spawning another stack (if they have the population surplus to do so).

Had to do that to form a second army of as many mercenaries as I could afford when four stacks of very angry Romans caught up to me after I left a trail of destruction all the way from the Red Sea to Spain :)
