How to get more? Generals in battle, governers in office or in positions of power such as companion judge etc. Spouses also are valuable as they get influence.
I make sure to acquire a good amount 50+ before you consider using it. Always have influence on your leader higher than anyone else or face a loyalty penalty. Your leader also needs influence for random decisions. Use his wife or other family members to strengthen the faction through support, gain loyalty or marry/kill rival nobles.
Also remember to have plenty spare. Don't get a person with 25 influence to make someone loyal. If there is a conundrum you'll be faced with options that require you to have influence to solve the issue or "forget it" and lose control.
