Military structures?
I've tried playing the Saxons, Visigoths, and Huns, and of the three the only faction so far that I've even been able to build real military structures with was the Huns. I thought maybe I just wasn't far enough along or hadn't researched enough into both trees or something, but I got halfway down both military and civic trees for Saxons and Visigoths, AND had province capital cities with all 6 slots available, AND tried destroying buildings to make room to see if it would suddenly give me the option, but no dice on any of it.

Is there something I'm missing? Or do Saxons and Visigoths just have really, really specific requirements for what cities they're allowed to build military buildings in? It's kind of annoying that I can't build them, since, well, they're basically the most important building in the game for progressing.

The barbarians are a miliitarized society, their units are produced from various civil buildings, like farms. They do not have a professional military building. Rome and the Sassanids have dedicated military facilities, and hordes have specific military encampments.

The Saxons do have a specific military building chain. I can see it in the building browser menu, under "military", but it's never buildable in any of my settlements. According to the builder browser I have the appropriate research and all that, but it just isn't letting me build it. I didn't check with the Visigoths, but I'm pretty sure it's the same thing.

I can't produce anything except the basic "militia" type units and a few faction-specific elite units because I don't have the military building.

Uh, I was just playing as the saxons...give me a second to see what building you mean.

The first building in the chain is called "Raiders' Gathering".

The only thing I can see under 'military' is the Horde's recruitment camps -- if you were migrating, you could build that in your army, but it doesn't offer anything you can't recruit at home. Migration buildings are marked with a wheel in the top left.

EDIT: Yup, horde recruitment.

Visigoths and Saxons don't have hordes that build structures.

Go to your faction page, click summary, there's a 'start migration' button. try it out.

Oh, I see. That's stupid. I guess the only reason those buildings exist is to make up for the lack of other structures they lose when converting to hordes. I was hoping for a little more unit variety than "cheap units", "normal units", and "slightly-better-than-normal units", but I guess Rome II and modding has spoiled me.

Units upgrade as you advance your research, there is actually a fairly broad unit variety for each faction -- not as broad as Rome 2's Rome with its massive amounts of auxilia, but broader than most factions in that game.

Raider's gathering is only avaiable when you're a migrating horde.
