An ethno-cultural grouping. There was never any faction that called itself "Sarmatia." The Roxolani, Iazyges, Alans, etc. were all Sarmatian tribes, but there was never any Sarmatian nation (Hah that rhymed).

Sarmatians were part of Attilas horde after they got conquered

I may be wrong but I think the game starts after the Huns conquered the Sarmatians.

If you want to play as the Sarmatians get Barbarian Invasion. They get run out of town pretty quick by the Huns and they have silly all female "Virgin archer" units.

technically the Alans and the roxalini are sarmations. Its like Athens and Sparta both being considered Greek even though there is no faction called greece in Rome 2
