OMG it all makes sense now. The actual Romans had to deal with this bullsh!t as well. No wonder it fell! (#TotallySerious)
This series is called Attilla total war, its specifically biased towards anything that isnt rome. Even back in this time period Rome still had basically the best quality of everything(except government) The game is designed to try and make the barbarians win, thats what this series is all about.
Total war Attila = total removal of Rome's advantages in every way. Your supposed to play barbarians and enjoy killing squishy Heavily armoured roman troops, its the opposite to Rome 2 where Romans killed the squishy non armoured barbarians.
Unfortunately Rome 2 is garbage, so I would recommend Rome 1 for troop accuracy.
P.S. In my experience the Palatina (even the Elites) are underwhelming because their defense is too low, they do a lot of damage but they get killed too fast to deal it, the only way I've gotten proper use out of them is by sending them into a fight where they got mixed up with heavier units that could take some of the blows for them. Protectores Domestici (mainly defensive) and Armigeri Defensores seem like more well-rounded units to me. Also remember your general can deliver some crucial boosts to your units depending on his skill...
