Difficulty Done Wrong
We all love our difficult games, but it should be hard because it test your mind. In this game everything is just stupidly stacked against you. Enemy units of lesser quality 1v1 all your troops. Hordes of enemy agents make it impossible to do anything. The huns, I killed 2 full stack hunnic armies and 2 more just appear in 5 turns (this is only on turn 30 by the way).

A fun difficult game tests your skills, in this, you can try your hardest, but your best troops can hardly stand up the enemies worse.

maybe lower the difficulty, on harder difficulties the ai gets an edge to accomodate for the stupidity every ai has

And then a Germanic pike militia unit kills all your Palatina Guard when you attack it in the side 1v1 on normal difficulty. Not that I'm bitter.

Then find a strategy around the magical advantages of the AI. There is a strategy to everything. How do you think the Romans felt when they were being invaded by hordes and hordes of barbarians? You think they didn't come out with a strategy just because their enemies were not strategy focused, and instead relied on numbers?

When you outnumber the enemy, have more morale, better-quality troops, better armor, better weapons, better training, better everything, and you're flanking them, and your soldiers still die off, there's really nothing in the world that can explain that. Not that I'm bitter.

OMG it all makes sense now. The actual Romans had to deal with this bullsh!t as well. No wonder it fell! (#TotallySerious)

Just increae the difficluty on the campaign map to allow the AI to field bigger armies and lower the difficulty for the battle map to prevent the AI from having those insane buffs and killing your flanking units. try very hard on the campaign and normal or hard for battle.

Yeah what Lord of War said.

Lower the difficulty if its too hard for you, its a non issue for a lot of people. Learn how to play better or pick a easier faction maybe?

It doesn't make sense that my Roman melee infantry is outmatched by lower quality spear infantry. The idea behind rome was that they could win every battle but still lose the war. Not they can barely hold their own against peasent uprising.

The unit balance could no doubt be improved in some areas but it really isnt that bad, if your loosing to basic troops like that then you need to do something very different in battles. Just try different formations and stratigies.

So basically, "get gud skrub" is what you are saying? I don't know, I usually think surounding a spear levy with Cohors should kill the spear levy.

This series is called Attilla total war, its specifically biased towards anything that isnt rome. Even back in this time period Rome still had basically the best quality of everything(except government) The game is designed to try and make the barbarians win, thats what this series is all about.

Total war Attila = total removal of Rome's advantages in every way. Your supposed to play barbarians and enjoy killing squishy Heavily armoured roman troops, its the opposite to Rome 2 where Romans killed the squishy non armoured barbarians.

Unfortunately Rome 2 is garbage, so I would recommend Rome 1 for troop accuracy.

Playred Rome 1 for over 200 hours, Rome 2 for over 100. Trying this game out now, sorry, but I want to try to make some sort of a difference.

Which difficulty are you playing? On Hard I found my infantry was still superior (especially once you upgrade to Legio), just not *as* superior to what you're used to (which is historically correct - barbarians started incorporating better tactics and weapons into their armies during this period while Rome had more difficulty fielding quality armies). I've played only a few turns on Very Hard and I notice the difference, but I wasn't under the impression it was impossible to win (light marines still beat a warlord when fighting him at sea :D). If you're playing Very Hard or Legendary and feel it's too difficult or unfair, just drop the difficulty, no use in beating yourself up over losing or diminishing the fun you're having... Plus Hard is enough of a challenge on a first playthrough when you're still figuring things out.

P.S. In my experience the Palatina (even the Elites) are underwhelming because their defense is too low, they do a lot of damage but they get killed too fast to deal it, the only way I've gotten proper use out of them is by sending them into a fight where they got mixed up with heavier units that could take some of the blows for them. Protectores Domestici (mainly defensive) and Armigeri Defensores seem like more well-rounded units to me. Also remember your general can deliver some crucial boosts to your units depending on his skill...

The protectores were the ones who got slaughtered by Armenian Spears.
