Depends. If you want a real challenge, go for the Western Roman Empire. If you enjoy a little peace, take the Eastern.
Funny you should say that, I find the Eastern Romans more difficult to play as.The Sassanids, with their endless vassals, seem to put up more of a fight than the barbarians, and the ERE is also way more spread out, at least it feels that way.

I can see how that would be the case. However, I think the White Huns may mellow out the Sassanids, so I think WRE may still be a bit more difficult to pull out of its nosedive than the ERE.

Well ERE may seem more spread out because they can be attacked by European barbarians and Middle Eastern empires

Depends on your difficulty level. If you're playing on Easy or Normal, either one is manageable once you know what you're doing. If you're playing on Hard, Very Hard, or Legendary... WRE is going to be harder every time, and exponentially harder as the difficulty level rises.

I always play on normal usually, using mods btw

I played legenadary and I'm telling you, two turns in, I was balls deep in barbarians...

You mean they were balls deep in you
^ The WRE definitely isn't easy, I guess it just feels easier to me 'cos I've finished three campaigns with them already (doing a little better each time). I also feel like Spain is a relatively safe country, save for the constant rebellions, but those are managable. With the ERE you have no safe provinces. With the ERE I always end up getting frustrated not being able to push back the Sassanids and their dang allies 'cos they just keep sending crap at me, and the addition of desert factions, like that desert horde (Lakmids?) didn't make things easier either. Guess I just need to finetune my strategy for them...

The White Huns are a rather recent addition, yes? The times I've played as the ERE they weren't around yet. Though... I've played as them and noticed that if you don't play your cards right, you can get crushed pretty quickly. Kinda fear that's what would happen to an AI-controlled White Hun faction : /

More like it haha. But yeah WRE. I had to shrink my borders by abandoning towns, which only caused more issues, but eventually I got things stabilized and THEN I was balls deep in barbarians.

Hahhaha, I am going to play as WRE, using Radious mod, and other mods. So I will sort things in the west then lend support to the ERE
