Starting as Himyar
Going to be dipping into the waters of the Himyarites. Any suggestions on opening moves? Things to build (since their building trees and things are different from the others I have been playing.) Unit details and army composition recommendations and such would be great.

Thanks a ton.

Aksum will eat you alive...you can not do much...to the north you will be messing with powerful sassanid satripies (and sassanids) not to mention the roman satrapies...and for the west we have the aksumite kingdom who are your worst enemy

armored camels are your best friends at the beginning, so an army of camels and desert spears is a good start.

Defeat Axum and take all their land - easy enough since they are of the same size as u. Also try to stay friendly with Sassanids. Keep close track of their satrapies and if one of them defects take them. Since u should be swimming in money u could colonize that abandoned town up north and depending on your relations with Sassanids invade them or ERE. ERE is usually the better option.

attack ERE they dont defend any city north of you, liberate the city Novo Trajan will make the Judes your ally and watch them wreck house. You have 2 of the best inf mid game one is the 180 charge light inf and the other Javelin throwers with 150 damage with p.s. they eat Desert spears for lunch. I had 500 kills with 1 unit askum doesnt have an answer for them. just make sure they dont get charged by horsemen.

I think it helps to stay Pagan. Converting to Jew really makes food production tough.

I built a navy, waiting for aksum to attack and destroyed there army that was traveling across the water then sent my own armies and took there lands quickly, then from there i went north at ERE as they were fighting the sassanids anyway.. so far ive got alexandria and im still pushing west against the gastandinds(?) who have took all of west romes african settlements.. It gets hard for me now tho as im fighting the suebians, italia and gastandids to the west and now the sassasnids and all there allys are coming at me to the east so maybe this tactic isnt the best

I did a very hard campaign with Himyar. I went westward and took out Aksum while giving some money to the sassanids to keep them happy until I was ready to go after the Eastern Romans. You can't expand very much early because of the crazy religion penalties. Eventually I kept going West and took all of Africa. Note that if you want to get your very best units, you have to have something ridiculous like 70% major religion in your empire. That's not going to happen if you are continually expanding. Also, the religion penalties make it more important than ever to capture entire provinces, instead of individual settlements

This is one of the few things that benefit WRE. Offset by maxxed out immigration though. Himyar is interesting since your start and "stuck" in a corner. But both Sassanids and ERE (and WRE if you got that far west) are big pushovers. You start biting some chunks out of any of those three and they collpase on themselves. Sassanids will put up a bigger fight though since they have some many allies and swimming in more gold than even the normal AI.

Ok, all good tips, but what buildings should I focus on first in owned provinces and what should army composition be? Any ideas are cool.

That early in the game? The same as all other factions. Spears and Sanitation/religious buildings.

Really? I did this on legendary mode and it was one of the easiest I have ever done, all I did was go straight for Axum then declare war on the ere, the Sassanids and their clients will love you for this, push up in to Egypt and then Libya using your axemen and armoured camels to destroy any Roman unit and then push up in to Palestine. By this point the Sassanids should be engaged with them in Turkey so I surprise attacked their home regions whilst their armies were away and just pushed East to the edge of the map and that was pretty much the campaign

Himyar are also a super rich faction and thanks to the Marin dam you start in a fertile province
