[PC] Low fps with good config -_-
Hi Guys & Girls,

I had such a good time with Attila Total War on my old PC but as it's getting old, I've bought a new one.

I wanted to play again but when I do the benchmark, I have bad result (20 FPS) even with my graphic options in 'low'.

Although, I've a good configuration with my gaming laptop ;

Intel I7 8750h
16go DDR4
Nvidia Geforce 1060 6gb

I run W2TW and Thrones of Britannia in very high/ultra wihtout problem but Attila it's such a pain in the ***.

I've tried to launch the game with the NVDIA Panel, I've also tried to modify the number of threads used by my CPU but it doesn't work... And I really really want to play !

What can I do ? It's really borring...

Yours.

I have no idea why this game is messed up, but i'm having a similar problem! I just upgraded to a Ryzen 7 2700, with an RTX2070 and it still only gets 36fps in benchmark. I'm on ultra but still. Also the game says I only have 3072MB of VRAM which was exactly what it said when I had my GTX960(4GB)

The game is 32bit, so it can't use/show more than 4Gb of VRAM.

The best advice is to lower Unit Detail, Shadows and Grass. And put AA on MLAA. The benchmarks are a bit useless, it's better to test what works best for you in 20v20 battles.

Turn off ssao it's broken, turn on unlimited memory, 2D portraits.
Lower screen space reflection and turn off depth of field, distortion effect and vsync.
Go to nvidia settings and set your GC as main so it's not using CPU's one. Set max performance and anisotropic to on.

You wont see the difference in graphics.
Fps will always drop in close up moshpits because off blood and corpses and because of warscape but there is nothing you can do with that.
I'm playing at 4k with gtx 1080 like a charm

EDIT: never take Total war benchmark seriously, it's crap. Test it yourself in custom battles

I would suggest you go into the Cmos and check your memory is set to the correct speed, Ryzens are known to require fast ram it impacts performance heavily if you have slow ram.

I must ask do you understand the purpose of a benchmark at all?
any idiot can set a custom battle with 1000's of variations that means any output is completely meaningless.

any test must be 100% repeatable every aspect must be repeatable hence the reason for a scripted benchmark.

oh and if you cant see the difference between the max performance setting or the max quality setting you really need your eyes testing.

I have Rog Laptop
windows 10 pro 64-bit
32gb of ram 2933 mhz speed
rtx 2070 8gb vram gddr6 memory.

i get 20 ish sometimes or 15 when lag kicks in in big battles..

I want best detail...
I have the specs for it..but this game is horribly un-optimized for pc...

is there going to be a optimization for pc???
and steam patch on 64-bit systems it is over6 years overdue....

This game will never run great, I just accept it as I like it. It's poor CPU optimisation and an outdated engine.

Indeed as is common with older engine's alot of work ends up being bottle-necked on single threads etc, and those you have ipc bottle-necking the old system, though such situations can be improved incrementing with better cpu's with higher ipc and clock speeds, among other things. So I can see such game's improving in overall performance with alder lake and beyond architecture as the clock speeds and ipc improves with each new generation. At the very least your looking at situation that its a matter of time really before cpu and computer architecture has improved enough to overcome such bottlenecks, so its not so much this game will never run will, its that one is looking at so many years down the road until hardware has improved enough that most people will have long sense lost interest in the game.

I have really bad FPS on global map until I change terrain setting.
This game has the worst perfomance of TW series. I won't play it anymore.

Config:
amd 5900x/32gb 3600/rtx 3080 (FPS is same for 3070ti)

Details on my config in case it can help.

Anti-aliasing : mlaa
texture resolution : ultra
texture filtering : anisotropic 2x
shadows : max performance
water : max performance
sky : max performance
depth of field : off
particles effect : max performance
screen space refl. : off
grass : max perf.
trees : max perf.
terrain : perf.
unit details : max quality
unit size : Large
porthole quality : 3d

unlimited memory : unchecked
v-sync : checked
ssao : unchecked
distortion effects : unchecked
vignette : unchecked
proxim : checked
blood effects : checked
battery meter : n/a

I set priority to high in the task manager.

The game runs fine and I get 60 fps stable both in global map and in most combats with a reasonable drop in some mosh pit situations. No crash.

Specs:
Ryzen 7 3700X
Ram 32GB
GPU GTX 1660 super 6GB GDDR6

This TW offers the best challenge of all TW. The graphic settings don't change much so lower some to get a working game even if you think your rig should run better settings. The game and engine graphics have their limits and CA don't support it anymore afaik.

This computer is too weak for this game. Attila is very demanding and requires top high end hardware no less than RTX 2080 Ti and K CPUs. I discovered is not suitable for laptops.
la_nague Mar 13, 2022 @ 1:51pm
game is heavy on a single core, it sometimes helps to not allow it to use cores that are busy with windows and other stuff.
webartist30 Apr 12, 2022 @ 11:40am
shadows and terrain detail bumped down one setting gained me 20 fps.
