Check that the squad unit leader is a male. Even if the unit is female the when you click on that unit it might be the unit leader giving the orders.

Its an all female unit.
Do you have the same problem? It may just be a vanilla bug.

Haven't tested, when you have black blades available you tend to skip using other sword units.

You can test it in custom battles, it takes only a minute to set up.
