Swords vs. Spears?

What type of units are the best in combat; swords or spears?
In terms of close, mid and long range.

Swords tend to be better in my experience, unless against cav (same in all TW games).

Swords are generally better in the charge and against most infantry units. Spears are better at defending choke points and do better vs cavalry. Range is irrelevant. Pike men are godlike defensive units as long as you can protect them from archers or being flanked. Generally if you are defending have spears in shield wall formation with pikes just behind showing their pike tips beyond the shield wall and have archers supporting. The enemy will have a nightmare of a time breaking through. For attacking, I'd say get a mix of elite sword based assault troops supported by spear infantry, spear infantry IMO is more versatile but it's always good haveing a few sword based shock troops.

I concur. Swords, or any other heavy melee unit, are good for assaults. Spears tend to fare better against cavalry, hence I like to place them on my flanks.

falxmen or huscarls destroy everything you can imagine, as long as its not a pikeman unit or cav;)
