I strongly recommend spending all influence on growing the family. Great for stability.
You can also grow his effective Influence by lowering the Influence of the Other Nobles: the power dynamic is based on the ratio of your family's Influence relative to the Others, so even if your king's Influence stays low, you can make the Other's lower, and that will increase his effective power over the faction.
The quickest way to lower the Other's Influence is to give them offices and positions in the realm/tribe. It's kinda counterintuitve, but remember that they must spend Influence to get these positions, and if the promotion is blocked, they must spend even more Influence, which is all the better.
Positions can also give Influence per turn though, so you'll have to cycle nobles in and out of offices to keep your king and his family's Influence superior.
Try to marry the king to a woman with Influence traits, as you can use her Influence on actions that the king would otherwise spend on. If the king already has a wife, but she has really lame traits, you might want to consider replacing her altogether.
