There may exist some chart, to indicate (I recall a spreadsheet Med2) as to what actions can bring about negative traits, but generally speaking, bad actions bring about negative traits; while heroic (in terms of battles) or good actions can bring about positive traits.
Also the game's nature means that each time you launch a campaign, the traits of your family tree will slightly vary, from wives to heirs, and siblings.
What can differ is the traits of wives and family members, even among the other factions you can select in a campaign.
Makes sense I guess...Theodosius' sons were pretty hopeless irl from what I understand.
