Help playing the Saxons
I have played the first 4 turns as the Saxons 7 times now and within the first 2 turns the Langobards declare war on me an then hit me with a full stack and a half. Im starting to get more than a little pissed because they hammer me into the ground before I even have a chance to build an army. Is the game trying to force me into a certain tactic that im not seeing or is this nation unplayable?

Ihad the same issue as the Saxons both times I tried to play them, so I picked up and went across the Chanel to Britain and took over the Picts and Caledoni. Try just peacing out of the region.

ignore buildings and build an army instead and then hit the Langobards. Or play as the Langobards. I find they are generally better for units. Clubmen are especially nice for defensive play.

Go on the offensive and destroy them.

I think you can also migrate.

Typically, I use the army at sea - off the coast of Britannia, to sack Londinium (the port city accessible on the same turn). After taking care of that I disband them to save the cash, plus your nordic brigade have useless combat stats.

From there, I build up an army in Tulifurdum - your Capital, and attack the Langobards, and move eventually onto the Alamans for their Gem Resources.

Ideally, you want nordic spears as the 'anvil' of the your army, with a mixture of axemen, and Saxon Lancers.

Edit: Don't forget to bring skirmishers as well, keep around 4 archers to remain behind your main line, and then javelins on the flanks.

Once you get good enough, have the Javelins in front of your main line, pull them back prior to being charges, and then flank them around to encircle the enemy.

You should always fight the Romans as barbarians. It'll help you later by making you friendly with everybody in the mid-game.
