whats your first moves and general sterategy playing as alans?
do you consider the minor victory objectives? its points you to two regions wide apart.

i've played this game a lot. 700 hours! mostly as sassanids, vandals and jutes. vandals being the only migrators in my list i normally go toward africa and its successful.

alans also lack a spear unit and their faction trait promotes a skirmish cav armies.
on my last play i settled in Sarmatia Europea building up wealth from buildings but soon my game broke as that region has two Hunnic spawn points. they spawn next to my capital and razed it. i had totally forgoten about that!

So with such a little money and low amount of troops what should one do? if you have played with alans please tell me about your sterategy and first moves!

Never beat it as them but you should play as though you're the Vandals but with cheap shock cavalry spam. Settling in Egypt and building a Mediterranean/Black Sea Empire seems like a good idea as you'll want rich and fertile territory outside the reach of the Huns that's still close to your required provinces. Raiding the Roman and Sassanid Empires would also be profitable.

I ripped off my clothes and the whole tribe followed me all the way to "England".
A nice island to settle and teach them celts a lesson or two. I used to check for spear mercenaries while raiding.
Im pretty sure I saw a mod somewhere that adds a spear unit to the Alans. Your choice :steamhappy:

Head south or head west...I settled my Danes in north Africa one game...those poor weak armored peoples did not stand a chance when my vikings washed ashore. The tides were red for a few years until i converted the entire Northern African continent to pagans.
IF you stay in central or east europe you will be washed over by the huns if they do not like you.

Taking any Island will give you a nice buffer. Everyone likes Egypt for some reason but any region that gives you time is fine. I like setting up in Spain personally.

Egypt is the most fertile part of the map and far away from the Huns. It's basically a fortress if you conquer the Ethiopians.

Oh fertility! Nah. I dont even build settlements for food like that. I usually pick the "in-between" farm types that give you a moderate amount of base food and money. And then plan my province towards the base food levels.

Anyone who has played Northern factions like Geats should be doing this from the get go anyway. If you arent building goat farms(or cattle or horse or camel farm depending on your faction) and a some fisheries instead of trade ports you are gonna hit a bottleneck mid game as your food dramatically decreases because the farm you have is not conducive to its new fertility level.

Planning your farms to be productive regardless of fertility is the way to go.
