As for farm buildings, Camels simply provide reliable food for region with poor fertility, whereas the stables provide really low food, but increased movement speed for your cavalry.
Well I just went it an Aksum campaign, as such here are some screenshots.
The issue is that, since you have a level 2 infantry barracks, you either need to de-construct it back to level one, before converting it to the Azadan building, or you need to research the tech in the screenshot provided below.

How it look in Aethopia when attempting to build an Azadan compound on turn 1.

Yeah you don't get much from the Aksum roster by building the 'lesser' infantry recruitment buildings in minor (non-walled) settlements.
Edit: Although you will need the third level "Levy Recruitment" building to build some of the best spearmen in the game: Elite T'or Warriors, their ability "Cavalry Counter-Tactics" causes +400% damage to cavalry, and turns them into a veritable horse grinder.

Typically what I do, is convert Aethopia to allow my Camels to be built from there, and build infantry from Aedulis (Your port city) for quick jump across the sea to eliminate Himyar, as they will be the first nation you need to destroy.
Then later in the game, when you're ready to take expand North, I use Aegyptus as my 2nd infantry recruitment center so I can expand both East and West.
The really powerful units for Aksum come from the spice missions (spice warriors), whereby you need to take Mazun's (the client state of the Sassanids) in Eastern Yemen.
