Best tactics vs the Huns
So, im playing WRE, its 422 and Atilla just showed up on my doorstep with 8 stacks in Pannonia.

My working strategy against the Hunnic horses is as follows--

Because I cannot chase the huns around on their horses, I have chosen a stationary defense with a counter attack force in reserve.

Front rank and flanks, Western Auxilia spears, slightly zigzaged, denfesive testudo.

Right behind, I have two Matriari javelineers, behind them, three elite balistari.

Behind that I have two or three Onager to fire on their archers.

Then I have four or five Elite Palatina in back, to provide rear guard and act as a counter attack force.

Hidden somewhere I have a couple of scout equites to hit their archers from behind.

Despite the onagers, balistarii, and scout equites pounding them, their horse archers anihillate my line even after I destroy their melee cav. I manage to win most battles but not without huge casualties which leave my legion combat ineffective.

Does anyone have a more effective strategy they want to share?

Thanks in advance.

I use similar tactics defences but always take high ground or wooded areas and average 30-35% casualties

Precursors are the best. Unlike in real history heavy cavalry and missles are your friend.Even having armor piercing infantry can easily cut through the Hun's otherwise overpowered infantry.

So get some moderately armored Axes and go to town.

Do you mean like mercenary axes? It seems the Huns sucked them all up, ill have to send a legion to germania or maxima sequanorum. By the way, how many times do you have to kill Atilla? I managed to smoosh him with a flaming onager shot but he is still kicking.

Depends on your faction. Barbarians usually have at least opne axe or club unit and decent swords.

For WRE you probably want a Palatina or better or anything with a shield wall. They will do more damage than your spears. So get classic and form an infantry line with ballistarii just doing all the work Equites Promoti or even Catafractii though I tend to avoid shock cavalry but they have staying power.

At this point thats about what im doing. Ive pulled everyone back to Mediolanum, even after smoking 5 Hunnic stacks they just keep coming.

I try to fight them in the cities as my infantry last longer and I win the battles more this way, I lost to many legions and good gerenals to fighting them on open field.

Well thats true of any faction. Tge Romans have a crappy lineup so unless you have an advantage like walls they tend to lose.

this is my battle line in the later period of the game.

my cavalry go for a long flanking move to attack any hun siege engines and hun archers!

I lost about 35% of my men and won the battle.against 3 Hun Armies.

Pay Attention to your skills and households as well. Since you get a -10 moral penalty vs huns and some units frighten your lines as well, moral is vital especially for low tier units . You should counter that by using e.g. Nomadic Traitor as a household or other moral traits in your army or general skilltree.

Excellent work! I guess I will have to retool my strategy and legion composition. Thanks for the share.

if the huns are all cavalry use whistling arrows they seem to panic any cav real fast.

I’ve played with visigoth and the only way that i used and work against huns was the noob boxes ( i was playing in normal) germanic spear masters covering the slingers , I’ve managed to deafeat attilla maybe two times but after the second time the huns made a counter for my noob
box:steamfacepalm:
They used some swordsmen and spears to fight against my strategy so I’ve lost so many battles after this and decided to start all over again learning from my mistakes and now I’ve finally managed to deal with huns by making a defensive alliance 😂💔

Yet i still think that the best tactic against huns is using a noob box or any defensive strategy (maybe keep stationed in a garrison with 4onagers , 10spearmen ,3 missiles and two strong swordsmen might work

Or you can try fighting fire with fire and have elite cavalry that have a good attack against other cavs (for me it’s taifali cavalry) or horse skirmishers like germanic raiders
