WRE Army Compositon
Hi y'all, I've been playing some attila lately (playing as wre on hard) and got myself in quite a good position. (note that I use a mod that makes the huns faction useless and stops climate change.) And now i'm at about turn 60 which means I basically can unlock every western roman unit in the game. But that leaves the question, what's the best army composition? I usually use a spear line ("line" as in 2 units with some helping legio comitatenses in the back, 3-4 elite ballistarii scattered around and 2 cav on my flanks.(OPTIONAL: Praeventores as scouts or cap unit and herculani seniores on the flanks) Didn't know if that was really efficient because, well, I'm a noob... Then i went on to watch some HeirofCarthage and saw that he used armigeri defensores as a main line of infantry. But isn't that an elite unit used for flanking? I've bummed my head on this for some times but I can't figure out what to do. Have you guys got any advice?

Spears beat cavalry
cavalry beat swords
swords beat spears
axes beat swords
pikes, cav, and ranged beat axes

My army composition is spears in front, heavy infantry behind them and reinforcing/flanking infantry behind them.

As I enter within archer range my spears will soak up the arrows and just before I come within charging range I pull back the spears and use the first line of infantry as my main line. The reinforcing line is interchangable between spears and your weaker swords depending on the situation but usually I just keep spears out of the fight to chase down any flanking cavalry.

Using elite infantry as a flanking force doesn't sound like a good idea because it opens their backs up to cavalry charges and ranged. Leave that to lighter lower tier infantry.

A unit of 4 legions
2 units of 4 spearmen
A unit of 4 archers
3 units of cavalry
General.

Spear guard the flanks, legions hold the middle until spears can wrap around. Cavalry deter flanks, and later on move around to eliminate enemy archers. General fills in weakspots. Archers focus on anti-general or anti-melee.

Winner winner chicken dinner.

Foederati. Lots of foederati. That is, if you would like to follow the actual path of the late empire.

I've been playing on easy, but I've had a lot of success with the following army composition:

6 spearmen (not foederati)
6 herculares seniores (cohorts/proctectores are fine for lower levels)
2 ravenna ballistares (can also be more sagitares or regular ballistares/armigers if you want)
2 sagitares
2 large onagers
general
optional unit (I usually opt for another onager but a cleanup cavalry unit works too)

Line of testudo spearmen in the front, 3 units of testudo herculares on each side, sagitares behind spearmen, onagers with explosive rounds behind them, general in the back. Place ballistares a little back to cover the flanks.

You can swap the spearmen and the herculares to fit the army you're fighting. Spears for cavalry, herculares for infantry. Hang back on open battles and let the onagers pummel anyone who tries to approach.

Not sure how it'll work on higher difficulties, but it's a good all-rounder on easy. The only faction it has trouble with is the huns, but I think that's fair since their units are all ridiculously op.
