I find it best to move the army into water in the direction you wish to move, before click the next land mass; once in the water then, click the next land mass.
This avoids any waypath errors that your army spend its movement points across land, as opposed to your wishes - across the water.
To move them onto land (say Britannia) select the army as transports and move them to another appropriate beach, or low point along the island.
Note: Once your army lands - no matter their remaining movement points; it will not be able to move any further.
Protip: If you have a navy, you can have your navy first blockade the port. Secondly, move your army onto land adjecent to the city (ensuring it has the re-inforce arrow/line to your Navy). Finally, select your navy to assault the city, and your army will be able to join the battle as reinforcements.
This is a good - and sometimes necessary tactic; to launching a sea-borne invasion.
Your general, and army will automatically/magically turn into Transport ships.
Transport ships are a very weak, and unable to ram, sea galley. If you're forced to fight at sea (and short of faction specific traits), you suffer a 50% penalty on all valuable traits.
However, once they get back onto land, the penalty is removed.
I only mention the ports as a method of taking your army out to sea, if the other option - the beach head, is farther away.
