What city in Faerun is the best?
In terms of which era in D&D canon and which city or town, where have the best adventures happened? What city or town probably stirs peoples imagination the most?

Also, go ahead and throw in what place we've yet to see in a campaign that you think you would like to see as a staging place in an adventure.

Amn is pretty rad. But that's probably simply because of the great design and writing of BG2

Waterdeep has Undermountain below it...that always got me excited....an enormous ever changing labyrinth ruled over by a completely bonkers and epically powerful wizard.

Sigil is THE BEST city in D&D. Sadly it is not in Faerun.

Hell yeah! Sigil forever!

Most memorable? For me it would have to be Baldur's Gate. I had grown up a gold box gamer and when BG1 came out, and you finally made it to the town late in the game and SAW how HUGE it was...at the time, towns of that size in an RPG were rare.

Have fond memories of walking into Beregost for the first time, meeting a bard, and getting jacked up by a witch. The best part is when I met a drunk guy named Marl in the Fieldpost Inn.

Neverwinter...it was the first city from the first Forgotten Realms game I ever played and will always have a special place in my heart.

Athkatla was "my first" and will always be my favourite, or at least, the favourite of my evil, greedy character.

Sigil! Hell yeah!

Although seriously, if you are looking for the biggest, most important city in Faerun, it would have to be Waterdeep. It's kind of like the Forgotten Realms' New York if instead of a Subway, New York had a giant seemingly endless Dungeon sprawling out beneath it.

Shadowdale is pretty important despite it's small size, if only because Elminster lives there.

Neverwinter has become very popular because of the video games, but I never really heard much about it in the old 2nd edition books I used to game with.

If I recall right, Luskan, the "City of Snails" was the setting of a really good book.

That's about all I remember. I'll post back if I recall some more.

I wonder how Waterdeep could fit into an adventure on its own.

Obviously, a good rogue centric story would work. A massive city is a massive playground for a burglar.

I think the problem with Waterdeep, in terms of adventure, has been how completely vanilla it is. Maybe this criticism is unfair but all the focus on it has only been Undermountain. I think a dungeon master would have a real challenge on his hands if he were to make an interesting story there.

Menzoberranzan, place is pure evil and filled with lots of fun. Played a tabletop module where the party had to disguise themselves and sneak in. Very paranoid place filled with an extra helping of backstabing.

I agree.

Some clarification:
- Faerun is in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting.
- Sigil is in the Planescape campaign settings.
- Neither setting are the default one; The default setting is Greyhawk (in 3rd Ed - didn't play any other ones)

Amn isn't a city. It's a country.

Anyways, my favorite cities in Faerun are Zhentil Keep and Skullport.

And no, Sigil isn't the best city in D&D, although I do like the Lady of Pain.

The Forgotten Realms are, by far, the best D&D setting there is. Ed Greenwood > the rest.
