A mage cantrip on his robes or cantrip them, i forget.
A zero level spell for cleric or magic user. They are really powerful as you advance but are quick and low cost in segment time and components. With the recharge system in the game a cantrip is almost always available so a mage can add to the battle.
It is also word that comes from the word incantation, which is a magic spell.

A cantrip is the most basic spell a magic user can learn. In 5e, magic users can cast cantrips all day for free. They typically aren't too powerful. Attack cantrips are usually about as powerful as a character weilding a weapon, and they get more powerful every 5 levels. The attack cantrips are basically there so the wizard isn't next to useless after spending all his/her good spells. In D&D, there are alot of cantrips that just have basic utilitarian purposes, like mending or cleaning or the popular mage hand, which lets the wizard move light objects with telekenesis. In the 5e campaign I'm in, I play a warlock with alot of unilty cantrips (and 2 attack cantrips).

Cantrips are considered level zero spells.
But if you use them from the quickbar, why is there also a cantrip selection thingy on the side? Is there a button for using the selected skill that I haven't found out yet?

One of the first things I do when playing a mage is remove the cantrips out of the quickbar since you have the rotating selector on the side. Frees up the quickbar for other spells/scrolls/potions as you progress.
A cantrip is a type of mildly obsucre word video games love using to expand our vocabularies a little bit at a time. My boys chew through them like torgue wrench and forward pass for me.

Can Trip? Yes. With my thing-a-ma-bob's, I'd call a person using a spell over and over their bread and butter and their rare stuff withcy-woo.

if you left click the circle your mage or cleric will then not use his weapon for auto attacks but cantrips. You can safely delete cantrips from your quickbar as they only clutter it up. Use them for auto attack and switch through them by using "X" by default but you can of course remap that to your liking.

However, if you level up your cantrips they get placed on your shortcut bar and have to be removed again which is kinda annoying but it happens only 4 times during your characters career so .... I live with it :)

This is what I needed to know, since there's no indication of it being selected. Thanks.
Welcome. Be aware that your npcs sometimes accidentally witch back to melee and go full ♥♥♥♥♥♥, charging into the fray. I do not know why they do that it just happened to me a couple times when i switched my weapons :)

Just so you know when they do that check if cantrips are still switched "on".

There has to be some use of weapon with cantrips in general as my witch bolt is doing necrotic damage (which comes presumably from my skull-topped scepter).
