In the 'Story Lobby' after you've selected your character you just need to set the options to "Friends" or "Public" and the folks will be able to join your game. Friends option is limited to your Steam friends list. You can use the in-game browser to find games or if playing with friends you can use the Steam overlay to join a friends game once they have launched the game.
The creatures in the game scale with the average party level so your level 6 might find it really tough until you get a couple extra levels closer to the level 10 if you join their game, but if they join your game it won't be so bad for you. Reason being is that the NPC companions that tagalong with you are only able to be brought in and controlled by the host (in story mode...in custom campaigns each player can bring in their own story NPC tagalongs if they wish to fill up the party - total is still 4 PCs including AI). So if you host the average party level would be about 7 whereas if you joined a level 10 group the average level would be about 9.
But back to the story progression, that is saved only on the hosts save game, while the joiners will save their individual character levels when they leave but their story progress will not have changed since the last time they played single-player or hosted their own game.
One last question: If a character who's ahead of me in the story joins my game, will they be able to do the quests again? (I reckon the answer is yes, since quest progress is stored in the save game not with the character.)
The only thing you "permanently" get from completing quests are steam awards some of which you need to unlock your companion skill trees which are quite interesting (why is there no paladin one devs?).
Thanks. :)
TLDR - Beat the "shade", will end in a cut scene and character selection. New options will be available.
