That said, fighters are probably the strongest class because they can get 5 APR while the rest of the classes can at best only get 3. If you can get them a nice damage boost on those attacks (e.g. from a mage casting haste, magic weapon and elemental weapon on them), there really isn't another class that can come close. I don't know if it was fixed in the last patch, but they could also stack Unyielding Avalance if they could get enough cooldown reduction gear, which gave them a ton of AC, really high HP regen and even more damage output.
Paladins look interesting. They can get an extra attack per round, they have some abilities that can add radiant damage to their attacks (and increase that damage), and they have a lot of heals. It looks like you could probably replace a cleric with a paladin and have something with more of a melee output.
Rogues, like mages, suffer from having only 2 attacks per round. While sneak attack is a pretty good damage buff, my melee mage had higher DPS than my rogue (mostly because +lightning damage gear is easier to find than +piercing/slashing), they also don't have any defensive buffs, unless you can get their cooldown reductions high enough that they could keep up riposte.
I think you can probably make a strong character using any of classes, as long as you remember you are what you wear, more than what you know. I.e. gear makes much more of a difference than your abiltiies.
I'm a mage and I was literally ran out of this game by an angry lynch mob for being too powerful. I can solo any dungeon and any boss by myself. People call me names like munchkin and shun me because I am so overpowered. I've basically quit playing the game because there is no challenge for me.
Explain why you are so OP!
But yes, whoever said mages are weak is an idiot.

I'll recommend playing Shield Dwarfs as wizards because you get light and medium armor for free and high constitution is also handy for survivability.
So this build is just trolling?
It happens in this game. There is no point in being OP because there are no challenging enemies and people will just shun you.
