I think what Steam did was disabled CD-Key checking for the game. This allows you to play single player, but multiplayer is still screwed because us who just bought the game never actually registered a CD-Key for our copy (in other words, Steam gave use a working copy of the game, but no CD-Key, so we are unable to play online). I wouldn't have such a problem with this if I could register one of my retail CD-Keys keys to play with the Steam version online. What Steam did does allows me to do what I purchased the game for anyways, but I can't play online with it because there's no CD-Key for my Steam copy of the game. If there was, I would play with the Steam copy. But seeing as I have an installed version of the game through Steam without a CD-Key, my only purpose for it is to add Xfire support for it. I'll be using my retail copy otherwise if I want to play online.

So bascially we still gotta wait for the cd keys in order to play online?

I assume when we actually do receive a CD-Key (if that ever happens), we will be able to view it from our library. I did read something about EA partnering with Disney to bring us Star Wars games online, I wonder if this is having an effect on what is happening with Steam now.

Yeah I can log in to the MP area, but it won't allow me to host or join any games. Keeps saying my CD Key is wrong.
WonderGamer May 7, 2013 @ 6:33pm
Exactly. It's not that the CD-Key is wrong, it's just that you don't have a CD-Key. You might be able to join a friend via direct IP, but I haven't tried that yet. I expect the CD-Key issue is EA's doing; they probably made this deal with Disney to cut off Steam users from acquiring new CD-Keys for Star Wars games. I wouldn't be surprised if this is effecting other SW games that require CD-Keys.

So I checked my registry, I am seeing a CD-Key there, but I'm not entirely sure it's legit. I guess the plus side is I can go in the registry & enter a CD-Key for one of my retail copies. The question is, will it keep after I've started up the Steam version or be rewriten with the Steam key. I'll look into it further once I have more time.

No, it will rewrite. I have tried it before out of curiosity. Refer to this thread for the two known fixes for this problem as of yet: http://steamcommunity.com/app/32470/discussions/0/828938354940801120/

Looks like it's working. I was able to get into the game & into a multiplayer match. Seems the problem is that you're only going to run into people who also have the Steam version, however. I read something yesterday that the Steam version only allows users to play with Steam users & Retail users to play with Retail users. Well I guess it's better than nothing, anyways.

I have a thread for you that explains how Retail Users CAN play with Steam: http://retakeeaw.freeforums.org/retail-to-steam-connectivity-fix-t5.html
Unfortunately, Steam users can do nothing. Retail Users are the ones that have to.

Anyone who looks at it should think about joining Retake Empire at War! We are an open and friendly community trying to revive this game and it's Multiplayer and put it back where it should and needs to be in the community. We cannot hope to do this without help FROM the community. On our webpage you can post about issues and get answers, you can schedule both EaW and FoC matches as well as mod matches, you can meet new people and get to know many others that play this game, and you can have lots of fun with us! We hope to see as many of you as possible!

where do you find the registry with the keys
WonderGamer May 8, 2013 @ 2:26am
Either HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\LucasArts\Star Wars Empire at War\1.0\CD Key or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\LucasArts\Star Wars Empire at War\1.0\CD Key (depending on your OS; Windows XP 64-bit & later will include Wow6432Node). To open the Registry Editor, run regedit from the run dialog (Windows Key+R) In the case of the expansion, it's Star Wars Empire at War Forces of Corruption instead of just the name of the core game. Be extremely careful in there. Any changes in the registry could potentially leave you reinstalling your computer if you don't know what you're doing.

I have a guide that explains how to go about doing this in the simplest way possible: http://steamcommunity.com/app/32470/discussions/0/828938354940801120/

People should read more, they would find solutions and explanations right under their nose.

I was simply explaining on how to find his CD-Key. If it weren't for that page (which I have seen a link for 2 times now on top of the page itself), I probably wouldn't have had a key to begin with as I hadn't thought that verifying cache would update registry keys.
