Trying to expand my VN sub genres. Wanna try something new. I have other games I've been eyeing but I know nothing about like Clannad. Atri -My Dear Moments-, If my heart had wings and Ginka.
The opposite of an Otome Game is a Bishoujo Game. You can just call all visual novels with a male protagonist, that has all heroine routes, as a "Bishoujo Game" The sub-genres for Bishoujo Game are also the same as Otome Game, Bishoujo Game could also be an Eroge, Moege, Nakige, etc.
Also to clarify: Galgame is not a subgenre. Galgame = Visual Novel. Galgame just means a game that has attractive character routes you can romance (it can be an RPG or a simulator game as well), but it is generally in the form of a visual novel. A visual novel can have romance routes, but not always, so a visual novel is not always a Galgame. Galgame specifies there are "romance routes" in its game.
Under Galgame -> is Otome Game and BIshoujo Game, both are types of games that have "romance routes" in its games. Only from here, you can talk about the subgenres, such as Eroge, Moege, Nakige, etc.
To answer your question: yes, CLANNAD is very outstanding as a visual novel. It is good because it freely explores the psychological maturity that come from coming-of-age. Not only that, its comedy and slice-of-life elements are also very good, its story and characters are very dynamic, and all other elements such as voice acting and music composition just creates what feels like an ideal piece of literature in the form of a visual novel. The developers really took their time exploring the themes in the story in this visual novel, so the length is also outrageously long.
I personally haven't seen CLANNAD ever go beyond 60% discount. It was the same for sales back in 2021, 2023, and 2024, the discount is always up to 60%. You could wait until summer sale, but I believe it'll still be the same 60% discount,. I suggest you buy it during this sale or you might get a worse deal later. The discount might go higher, but you might have to wait a couple more years.
It's definitely at the top of my wishlist though.
Clannad is very long so it is a commitment if you want full value. You could just simply start with a shorter game to see how it feels. There is also just youtube that can give you a preview into the game. Clannad was my first I ended up stalling and finishing much later. Part of the reason was because the anime was fresh in my mind so it wasn't new to me.
Wow there’s a lot of text in the replies for your ask.
